I've read pleny on large grips contributing to a slice and too small a grip with a hook. I'm left handed, swing right, I wear a XXL glove, mostly due to wide hands, but not long fingers. According to a sizing chart I should be a standard plus a couple of wraps or at most a mid size.

I'm currently using mid-size Winn grips, I can't seem to find a comfortable fit for the right hand when I shade my left thumb to the right of the grip. I also use an interlock grip due to short "pinky" fingers.

I'm planning on buying a few different grips and trying them out.

Has anyone found a larger grip helped to reduce or eliminate a slice?

jdjanda,

I have 2xl hands, with long fingers. I use oversize grips and I have wondered if these are too small. Just a thought that I tried. Go to the golf/tennis store and get some overwrap for tennis grips. Wrap up the grip and try it on one club-It's non-adhesive so if it doesn't work remove it. After trying this, I think the jumbo Golf Prides are fine for me, although I will try to double up on the tape where the right hand rests (I am right-handed).

I'm not understanding your question.

You stated at the beginning of your post that you've read plenty that smaller grips yield more hookish release......and larger grips delay release for "slice" effect.

You end the post asking people to confirm the contrary.????

I am wondering if anyone has experienced the opposite when moving to a larger grip, IE the larger grip reduced or cured a slice.

I suppose I didn't answer the question. The larger grip did not cure my slice.

Just because some sizing chart says that you should use a larger grip doesn't mean that you have to abide by it. Use grips that you feel comfortable with. Once you do that, then stick with it.

Also, I don't think the grips will have a big effect on your swing. It may help slightly. But if you have struggling with a slice, you might look more at the fundamentals of your swing.

A grip size change alone isn't always the answer......if it were that easy I'd run small grips on the even numbered clubs and large grips on the odd numbered clubs and be able to work my ball at will.

i agree with the post above.

but to me more constructive.......

ya... i have longer fingers and smaller palms. so most gloves fit weird... seems that my fingers are slightly longer than a large in glove size and my palm is a med-large.

i built up some grips with 3 wraps and hit the ball much straighter... easier to draw it as well. sliced much less.

in retrospect I think that there is a line somewhere...... im sure the old adage is true (small-- hook .... large-- slice) BUT with a small grip i found i had to grip way too tightly... holding on to save my life, i couldnt release the club properly. with the large grips i can relax more because they fit in my hands more naturally... thus preventing such bad slicing.

I agree with the force of your grip can be determined my the correct grip size.

With a smaller grip it is easier to roll your wrists through impact, while a larger grip restricts that same movement. Does your wrist roll (rotate) easily, if so your probably good with your current grips, then again feel is everything

What lead to this post is I am having trouble finding a comfortable position with my right hand after moving my left thumb a bit to the right side of the grip.

I am left handed and it seems I am not closing the face at impact (weak right). I went around the house test fitting objects and found that the diameter of a shower rod seemed to fit well, my hands felt comfortable and my right hand fit great over my left thumb. So that lead to researching information on the internet about the effect of grip size on the ability to roll the wrists and close the face at impact.

I do not expect changing grips to be a miracle cure, more researching information at this point. I need to regrip my driver and 3 as they have standard sized grips, surprise I often slice my driver but not my 4I which has mid-sized grips.

Sorry dude, this just hit my funny bone.......I can picture you in a manic state....."Nope...too small......nope....too thick........What...wait a minute......Oh Yeah...the shower rod it is". On a serious note.....they can build up the grips a tad more for you low hand if you want.....my irons are sort of that way. Helps me....especially with wedge work around the greens. I love the fatty grips here. I don't like jumbo's.....don't like midsize.....but somewhere in the middle is perfect for me.....maybe that's the shower rod size.

To be clear, I wasn't expecting the larger grips to fix a slice, that is a swing path and alignment issue that I am close to resolving. I did want to be certain that I answered the OP's question though and didn't in my first post.

    • Day 446 - 2025-12-20 Woke up early and got some swings in before teaching putting all day. Looking forward to doing the same tomorrow.
    • It's miles better, though.
    • Went up to Erie for a lesson. I still need to work on how I shift my weight into my right leg and turn into the right leg. I extend it too much and externally rotate it too much. That all causes me to over rotate the hips and cause weight shift issues in the downswing. I need to feel like my right leg gains flex (it doesn’t), and my knee cap faces forward. The right hip sinks back and right. I need a need a ton more internal rotation. I still have some right elbow issues in the backswing. The path is better, but too much right elbow bend. I need to maintain width in the right elbow and let my right shoulder retract more, let’s say at A3, which helps keep that right arm extended.
    • Day 130 12-20 Today was just swinging what i had and go from there. Did focus on getting to lead side. Recorded swings for lesson  and hit real balls.
