Callaway X22's too much offset?

I've been playing with the X22's for a couple months, and was happy with them until I actually started taking lessons, and my shots seem to be ballooning really badly now. My Pro said that I need to start looking into possibly getting clubs with less offset in them, because my swing is starting to look excellent, but as it gets better, the ballooning starts.

Is he correct that the offset on the X22's is too much once you start hitting good golf shots? He recommended a couple sets of irons to me, one being the Cleveland CG Gold, which I demo'd for a round, and while they were longer than my fitted clubs, they actually felt better to me, but I don't know if it was just a fluke.

So, is trading in my X22's for a set of CG Golds a good progression towards a club that I can actually grow with? It seems that the X22's are easy to outgrow once you actually start working on your swing.

Or is it all in my head, he's wrong, and I should stick with the X22's?

I am far from an expert, but this is the first I have ever heard of offset causing ballooning. I would say Rocco Mediate and Eduardo Romero have pretty good swings and they use the X-22(the standard not Pro series) to excellent results. Now with that said, shafts can have serious effect on trajectory. Are you using the standard Callaway Uniflex in your X-22s?

Can't be the offset, if you've got the uniflex, I can guarantee that's what's causing the ballooning. Get stiffer shafts or just get new irons with stiffer shafts, it's up to you.

I too play the X-22s and I've noticed that they seem to go pretty high. I'm sure that some of it is my swing (probably most of it), but like mhodar13, those uniflex shafts may be causing more of it than anything.

I've seriously considered selling them/trading them for a set of R7s, or one of the other sets I was hitting well when I was testing irons several months ago (or sell the X-22s and revert back to playing the Hogan Apex Edges that I have).

Good question. I have offset irons and I have gotten my swing groove back together after a few (12) years off and I feel like I'm hitting the ball a lot better but now my mishits go straight to the left instead of slicing like they used to. I was wondering if I should ditch the offsets since I think I am getting the face closed in time... Maybe I'll just try some clubs without much of an offset and see how that works out.. Any ideas? My clubs are oooolllddd too..

At a 24.4 handicap index, your swing is not too good for the X22's, as I know several low handicappers playing various Callaway X series irons.

So, I guess I'll have the shaft changed out in one of my irons to see if that helps the problem I've having. After doing some more searching around the net, I see that the uniflex shafts aren't very popular with most people to begin with.

And my Handicap Index is more than likely a lot lower than 24.4, I just haven't recorded my rounds since I started my lessons. I need to catch up on that this weekend actually.

X22 has what Callaway calls "full offset." See side-by-side comparison of all six of Callaway's current iron models on their website:
http://www.callawaygolf.com/Global/e...omparison.html

Unfortunately, Callaway technical spec sheets for their iron sets don't list club-by-club offset or bounce.
