Pain in Right Ribs - Torn Intercostal Muscle?

Ash1974

Recommended Posts

I had that injury 2 years ago, right front ribcage.  It took 2 months before I was able to do any light short game work, 3 months before hitting PW and 5 months before I was back to hitting driver.  First month is really bad because it hurts a lot every time you move and there seems to be little improvement day to day.

Either way if you get the intercostal injury you're probably looking at 2 months out of action minimum.

Hi,

I'm a beginner golfer and I did my injury 10 days after start practicing. My pain is mainly in the chest (x mark in the picture) but sometimes

it hurts in the side too. when I deep breathe or some little movements I feel the pain.

1.jpg

(by the way this is not me :))

My pain still active, I don't practice for about 4 weeks now ( the first month I did some trys in the driving range after 2 weeks of rest) and the pain is here. I did some changes at home in the furniture yesterday and the pain today is killing me.

I did go to a doctor who told me to do anti-inflammatory and nothing happened, to special massages, and lately I went to a Chiropractor who tells me that he can't help. My pain still here, my chest(right side) hurts when deep breathing, when I do some movements of the chest or right arm (moving in bed huts like hell).

Did some RX and nothing is broken.

I'm very frustrated at the moment because I can't play golf, I can't do any sports, even swimming causes me pain.

Anyone with this pain marked with the "x"??

Thanks in advance

I recommend you see your doctor (or another doctor) again. If you're in pain, there's a reason for it.

Agree 100%

What you describe and the length of time and pain level sounds like a possible rib fracture or tear in the muscles?

Go see another doctor and get some x rays or MRI done, or pay to go see a good physio first

I'm going through something similar right now. It sucks.

The pain started in august after a couple of long practice sessions on the range. Pain and tightness on the side of the rib cage and shoulder. After a week I also started having pain when switching position and extending my arm, especially while lying down. I ended up taking a long break from all sports and it slowly got better. I started playing again last week and the tightness in the right rib cage is still there, I also get a little bit of pain in the shoulder just underneath the shoulder blade. I'm gonna call a physio next week to make an appointment.

Fisiotherapy almost finishing and the pain is there, not the same as 2 months ago but I still feel it. when I raise my right arm or some quick movement or turning around in bed.

sounds a bit like what I had. Good news is that my pain is almost gone but it's been 4 months. My GP suspects a potential displaced rib so I am seeing another doc next week.

I am 10 weeks into the same injury - I tried to 'soldier on' for a couple of weeks, but had to stop mid round as the pain was killing me, literally crying after I tee'd off on the 9th. Tried again about 2 weeks later and allthough I could 80% swing once I was warm, the next day was agony. I have since done nothing for six weeks and at last am starting to heal. There have been times when I really thought I had this for life.

The lesson is, if you get this injury, just stop and wait, you'll need at least two months and just need to get your mind around it.

Anyway - I've got a round booked for Xmas eve, which will be about 12 weeks after the injury - can't wait and keeping fingers crossed!

At least it happened in the winter!

OK , the Physiotherapy treatment continues for more 20 sessions and 1 more box of anti inflammatory pills. The doctor is talking about chronicle pain and maybe it's related with my back so she prescribed me some back x-ray.

Man this definitely sucks. I think I'm hopeless.

Lopic.

I am in the same boat. I don't have the sharp pains like before but I'm still not 100%. One day I think I'm all better then I make a few practice swings and my ribs/shoulder tighten up again. It's soooooo frustrating.

My doc sent me to a chiro. He thinks my trouble come from my back. I did 2 sessions with him, he is confident he can make it better but said it might take a few sessions. The guy does seem very experienced and honest so I'm willing to give it go. We'll see.

The pain is very very quiet in the last days.

I'm taking some practice lesson next week and try not to hit the ball too hard, if I feel pain I will immediately stop. I need to take that risk because free lessons finish next month and I need my handycap although I feel that I'm not healed and it will hurt.

I don't do even a putt for about 3 months now I can't believe I will suffer as I did back in September/October.

Happy new year to all!

Ok finally after 5 months I know that my problem is muscular fibrosis with 1,2cm lenght located in the interior muscle between the 6th and the 7th rib. It was seen in a ecographia, now I will treat this properly with the right treatment.

I got my handicap finally, but my chest paid the price, the pain still here.

I have felt this feeling since last week and today, after a one hour lesson and nine holes I couldn't take it. I went to the ER and they diagnosed me with a "chest wall strain". the dude told me I probably strained the cartilage between the ribs and it would take weeks to heal. I did have a X ray done and everything showed up normal. I was in a car accident last year and I think this has something to do with this but who knows. I got good insight and information from this thread. Thanks.

Hey guys.  Got the pain in the same place (as illustrated by Lopic) two weeks ago from tomorrow.  Horrible.  I warmed up pretty well, but I tried to soldior through the pain... maybe 15 more balls on the range, and was in absolute agony (this is coming from a guy who played the second half of a lacrosse game with a broken thumb, and went to practice the next day... freaking TERRIBLE pain) by my approach shot on the 1st hole.  It's nowhere near as bad as it was, but it is still painful and I am still totally unconfident in taking full swings.

Got some excellent info on this thread - thanks.  Sounds like I won't be playing golf for at least another 2 - 3 weeks....?  Longer?

One thing I noticed when I initially injured it was even chipping was excruciating.  Did you guys stay away from even practicing putting?

Thanks again!

I would just like to state for the record that this is the shittiest injury I have ever had. I would rather break my ankle or some sort of bone that I could "stay off of" than have this injury again. I am on day 3 from the point where the pain was so bad I couldn't swing the club.

I read that any practice if you have pain is bad. I was considering to putt though because you're not really taking a full swing but I have yet to try it. If you do, let me know how it is because any practice is better than no practice. Also, try getting some cloth tape and taping the affected area. I have been doing that the past two days and it helps a bit. Just don't take it off until you REALLY need to change the tape. I have taken it off when not really needed and the second time I ripped off some skin, haha. WOOPS.

I wish us all the best through this crappy time and I hope we all heal in a timely manner. (2 weeks or less)

Sorry man (men). I've had this basic pattern injury before and it absolutely sucks. There are a number of things that it could be, none of them fun. The only advice I can give you from experience is to go and see a good physical therapist. I carried my injury for four or five months with little to no improvement before starting treatment with a specialist sports physio here in South Africa. The sessions were absolute agony -- if she hadn't been a super-fit blonde hottie I honestly would have cried -- but they sorted me out in a way that rest, ice etc. never came close to. She gave me the basic rundown on how it worked afterwards but, I'm not going to lie, I was looking at her chest and missed most of the details. D'oh!

    • I agree with @pganapathy about removing some clubs. I would recommend removing the 2, 3, 4 and 5 irons for now. Play with Driver 3W 5W 3H 5H 6 iron 7 iron 8 iron 9 iron PW ( you don’t have listed) 52 56 Putter Th 60 wedge can be difficult for new players, but you could keep that If your 3H is adjustable, increased the loft to be more like a 4H. Play with these on course and see if you can get a feel of the actual yardages for each club and especially the gaps between them. It may take 10 or more rounds. A par 3 course is helpful for determining the gaps in the irons and some woods too. A device like a Shot Scope H4 can really help give you your actual yardage on course.

    • Day 12: Same as last couple days, but focus was on recentering aspect of flow. When I recenter earlier I make decent contact most swings but if I recenter late or not at all it’s a roll of the dice.
    • A couple of things.  Some of the clubs in your bag should be dropped immediately.  A 2-iron for example with what obviously seems to be a lower swing speed or possibly not great swing yet is a definite no-no.  To be hitting that 120-140 yards, which I assume includes run, is a sign that you are not getting the ball airborne at the correct angle to maximise distance.  The reason your 3 and 5 hybrid are going the same distance is that your launch angle is better with the 5.  Loft is your friend. Ideally I would suggest going to a golf or sporting store where you can hit golf balls on a simulator without being disturbed to understand your club carry distances and hopefully swing speed.  With that information we can definitely guide you better.
    • Let us be clear, unless you have proof of cheating, you just sound like a case of sour grapes.  In our club we have a guy who won club titles for many years.  Yes, he was a low single digit handicapper, but there have been quite a few others who played at his level.  Yet his mental strength and experience helped him win in many years when he shouldn't have.  Did he sandbag.  DEFINITELY NOT.  Did he just minimize his mistakes and pull out shots as and when needed.  Definitely.
