I really started to play this year. Joined a club and my skill has been climbing. Unfortunately my score has not been dropping? I have good holes and blow up here and there. Throw in a eight or two, some sevens and a sprinkling of sixes and you are dancing around 100. Today I held the blowups to a 7 and a 8 and shot a 90 on a difficult course.
My goal is to shoot in the 80's this year. I am pretty confident I can still do it.

Have you ever felt your skill was better then your score indicated?

I feel my skill level exceeds my consistency.......if that makes any sense at all.

I can visualize and pull off some great shots but I don't do so with regularity.

I'm a scrambler as a result. I look at a tough lie as an opportunity to really have some fun and be creative.

My score would be better if I'd tone it down and just have my primary goal of tee shots to be finding the center of each fairway and green.

I enjoy the struggle.

I tend to top about 4-5 iron shots per round, and send another 4-5 way off to the right or left. Other than that I'm pretty solid.

I almost always felt my skill is better than my scores/results... I think we'd be lying if we said we could play a round w/o wishing for at least 1 or 2 shots back! I have consistently broken 80 for the past 2-3 years now, and still wish I could be a bit more consistent.

I'd agree with you that you could shoot under 90, and do so simply by continuing to avoid those blow-up holes! For me, I learned to take my medicine and not try to hit "miracle" shots when you find yourself in trouble, and just salvage what you can. Then, short game short game short game I'd say.

You can do it!

Yeah I definitely feel I'm capable of better scores than I shoot. I'll often have a round with a stretch of 6 holes under par, but still put up a couple doubles and a string of bogeys elsewhere and I still have never broken 80. What oneF457z said definitely helped me in going from the 88-93 range being a good day to 80-84 being a good day. Convincing yourself you can perfectly shape that drive on a dog-leg par 5 and get an eagle putt, or hit the green with a miracle shot from a terrible lie or a bad drive with obstacles between you and the green is just guaranteed to add a bunch of strokes to your score each round.

That and short game of course. The thing is, if you're confident of a make in the 6-10 foot range (even though you miss them sometimes, of course), and are confident of an easy 2-putt in the 10-20 foot range, and you're comfortable enough within 50 yards that you know you can get inside 20 feet, and sometimes inside 6 feet, then that takes away a lot of the feeling that you need to work the miracle shot. If you end up with a lie or ball position for you 2nd shot on a par four where it's really just not smart to go for the green at your current skill level, it feels a lot better to hit the smart shot if you think you've got a reasonable chance to get up and down for par, and know that if you don't hit your best pitch, you're at least confident you can pretty easily save at least a bogey with a solid 2-putt.

If you play smarter and practice the short game, that can easily turn your two 8s into a 5 and a 6, and your three 6s into maybe a 4 and two 5s. Even less optimistically, that can easily shave 5-8 strokes off most rounds, and that puts your good rounds solidly in the mid to high 80s.

I almost posted this same question yesterday.

YES The deal with me is I neve seem to have it all click at once, when I driving well my chipping may be off, when I am putting well my irons aren't working. It has been a several years since I broke 80, but I know it will happen again soon...

I truely believe I am capable of shooting better scores. I mostly play 9 hole rounds, and my normal 9 hole round fluctuates from a best of a 43 to a more normal range of 45-48. I do know for a fact that the difference between myself and a golfer who shots 39~45 instead of 45~48 is short game. I three putt and almost never get up and down.

In my bag:

some golf clubs

a few golf balls

a bag of tee's some already broken the rest soon to be

a snickers wrapper (if you have seen me play, you would know you are not going anywhere for a while)

and an empty bottle of water
