Been playing for 10 years and yesterday shot a 79 for the first time. Shot a 39 on the front and a 40 on the back. I birdied the last hole to break 80! I hit the ball decent off the tee but hit my irons great and putted great also.

I've been really practicing putting lately and it helped me SOO much! After hitting that it makes me wanna golf a lot more now.

Very nice, I have read it over and over. Short game short game short game. I have to putt more. It is boring to me though.

imo key to breaking 80 is just avoiding doubles (which is hard as hell for me sometimes :( )

If you chip out of the trees everytime instead of going for the hero shot and treat par as birdie from there I find that I pretty much break 80 everytime(unless there are a ton of hazards/ob on the course and Im having a horrible day off the tee)

I was one double bogey above a 79 yesterday. I hit 6 greens on the front nine - five 3-putts and one gut wrenching side hill 4-putt (that was almost a 5-putt). Out in 44. Not impressed.

I just focused on keeping the ball in play on the back nine (not thinking about putting). Three GIR, got up and down a few times, and shot a 37. I still need to work on my putting but I'm not fretting about it.

Congratulations! I've been playing for about 15 years and have only broken 80 I think 5 times. It makes the game a lot more fun.

I shot 81 today with three doubles. Four penalty strokes. I know what you're talking about here.

But back to the OP, Congrats! Shooting in the 70's is kind of like my holy grail every time out. I think there's a bigger difference between 79 and 80 than there is between 75 and 79. That's just how I feel. And don't let anyone razz you about your equipment. I get alot of that but hey, use what works.

I remember my first time! Breaking 80 was the bite from the golf bug that has me hooked to this day. Now that you have the confidence and the mental images of breaking 80, you can really start to enjoy the game much more!

Did you know that you needed birdie on the last hole to break 80? If so the "you the man" actually either way - "you are the man" but knowing you need to bridie a hole an doing it, is very clutch

Yea i figured out with two holes left that i needed a par and a birdie and i parred the par 3 then just tried to hit a drive out to give me a shot at a birdie and i made a 15 ft putt for birdie.

Congrats! Earlier this year I set a goal for myself to break 80 before the end of the summer. Of the 3 guys in my regular group, I had the best chance because I'd been the closest on several occasions and practice the most, etc. Well first week of August, we're playing and the guy that we all thought was least likely to get it done, shoots a 79. He did it with 3 birdie putts, each of which was over 35 ft. He also hit two drives DEEP into the woods that somehow came bouncimng back out to the middle of the fairway. We get to the 17th tee and we realize he needs a par and a birdie.

17 is a birdie hole but he hooks it and has about 180 to the green. Pars that one, but now 18 he's never birdied in his life. Has a 45ft putt from the back of the green to the front downhill and right to left, and drains it for a 79!

Next time out, was just a couple of days later. I get a birdie, and 11 pars but also 2 doubles on my way to my 79. I had a 5 footer on 18 for a 78 but wet my pants and blew it 3feet past. Made that one though.

One week later, the 3rd guy gets his...only he shot a 78 and that was even thogh he went OB on 18 and had a double.

Funny game!

    • Hello Everyone, I am moving to a new house and first thought... let's have a room for indoor golf practice! I know many of you love to record your swings, but indoor there is always the issue of the blurred clubhead at impact due to the poor lighting compared to practicing in the sunlight. Has anyone figured out a combo of camera and indoor lighting to get good results at 240fps,  720p?
    • Couple things to update First on the clubs/ball. I switched golf balls to the Left Dash ProV1x. It seems like a great fit for me. I always need lower spin off the tee, it's about a half club longer into greens, and still gives me enough spin with chips and pitches to hit whatever shot I need. The durability is insane too, played 35 holes with one over my last two rounds and it still looked brand new until I lost it. Hybrid is no longer. Couldn’t quite get a consistent strike and the random snap hook left was always lurking as soon as the strike drifted out towards the toe. I know it was me not the club but I couldn’t stand the lefts anymore. Titliest fitting guy came to our club a few days ago and I had been curious about the T200 3iron. I hit a few with it and the stock HZRDUS graphite shaft, it wasn’t bad at all but I could definitely tell when I mishit it. Then the fitter had me try the U505 3iron. When he asked if I was open to trying it I said something like “Isn’t that the game improvement one?” and he said “Just trust me and hit a few with it”. Within 5 swings I was sold. Suddenly it didn’t look as big and chunky when I started hitting rocket after rocket. It did every single thing I want a 3 iron to do. It flies very high, forgiving, can hit it off the tee and ground, can flight it low when needed, and best of all, it doesn’t go left. He had me try to snap hook one left and it resulted in a nice tight draw, nowhere close to a hook. Tried it with the stock shaft and their upgraded one, ended up hitting it the best with the Graphite Design Tour AD IZ-95. Ended up getting a great deal on a used one that arrived yesterday so going to go measure my numbers with it today at the range. I expect to be using this a lot for 2nd shots into par 5s, being that 230-250 club. Hit some on the Mevo+ yesterday and the distance is exactly what I needed.     From a playing perspective, been playing pretty solid so far this season, driving and putting have been solid overall, approach shots have been good for the most part and short game wasn't great to start the year but it's been getting better lately with some more dedicated practice. Compared to scratch over 7 rounds:
    • so with the driver. Feel more arm  width at A4. keep an in the eye on the ball. The first move from the top is lowering the hands down. Don’t mix that up with looking up at the target as the club comes down from A4 with the body. Feel like I get width with the arms from the chest in the Downswing.
    • Wordle 1,070 3/6 ⬜⬜🟩⬜🟩 ⬜🟩⬜⬜⬜ 🟩🟩🟩🟩🟩
    • Went back and reviewed my rounds this year at my home course to fill out the spreadsheet. Realized I have made at least par on each hole but two that I have bogied. At my skill level, it gives me a new confidence that I can play each hole decently well and strong together a lower score. Great mental boost.
