I am currently playing at + 3.7 handicap and seems to me it is so difficult to break 72.

The lowest i score is 73 ( 36 + 37 ) ,that was 2 weeks ago. My game was solid and still i misses a few 5 to 6 footers putt for birdies.

I know to break 72 , i need to have good game plan , minimized the error , but sometimes mistakes do happen ...it is so demoralizing !

*sigh*

Today ,i shot 77 ( 40+37 ) , and i did miss about 5 birdies putt, either lipping or 1 inch short ! I guess luck has to be one big part to have good score !

you must be playing at a tough ass course if you are a +3.7 and havent broken 72 before.

No, he just has a + when he shouldn't. He's actually a 3.7 index. The course ratings and slope for his courses can't support a +3.7 having never broken 70 let alone par. The course rating/slope pairs are 72.4/126, 72.0/122, and 71.7/124.

I'll remove the + from his account.

I was curious so I looked up your home course's website. It looks like a very beautiful course! I have been to China many times on business, and hopefully one day I will have the opportunity to play one of the many wonderful courses in your country. Regarding your scoring and handicap, there is something amiss between your handicap and the course ratings. According to the course website, the ratings from the tips (Gold tees) vary from 71.7 to 72.4 depending on which set of nine holes are used. The slope ratings are fairly reasonable at 122-126, suggesting that the course offers a reasonable challenge but is not too difficult. Based on these course ratings, it is mathmatically impossible for your handicap to be +3.7 without having broken 72. Perhaps you mean that your handicap is -3.7? In that case it would be quite possible for you to be able to score regularly in the low 70's but still not shoot par or better.

I have a similar index as you and havent broken par on 18 this year ...YET
i have on nine, but something gets in my head when coming close on 18
i was thinking of this, this morning as i drove to work

I think once you get "used" to breaking par consistently, that it will stop messing w your head...i think.......

i get to the turn under par a lot and just toss it away on the back
i was -3 after nine this year and then finished at +1 after the back - talk about frusterating
i left a lot of putts out there though, sitting on the edge or 1" out (on the back)

but i am making WAAAY more birdies lately, so i know its close (average 1-3)
usually i just make a bunch of pars, but now i am seeing more birdies

its harder to get that index lower when your already in the 2-5 range i think
it will come

This is the reason your not getting there and possibly missing some scoring oppurtunities on greens. It is important to trust your game and take it one shot at a time. Trust me once you hit that first ball out of bounds you are not all of a sudden a worse golfer than you were before you hit it OB. You have to trust the swing that got you that far and make some putts. It will happen just dont let those bad shots tear you away from a good score.

In many cases you can look back and say well I shot a 77 today but i blew that drive OB right on hole 12 which led to a double bogey then my swing went downhill from there. My question to you is why not trust the first 44 swings you made. Why does that one mishap have to be in your mind when you step up to your next shot. Next time you play keep all those shots in mind.

This is not true in my honest opinion. There is always a step better with the game we are so lucky to play. The best players in the world are better at maximizing scoring opportunities and looking past their mistakes. Albeit, their mistakes might cost them less strokes, they still make them.

Once you finally break par, it does seem to get easier. I was on the brink for two years but couldn't get below 72. Last year once I finally broke par for the first time it seemed like it was so much easier. I've since broken par too many times to count and have a personal best of 65 (-7). I think it's more mental than anything once you get to a certain point with your golf game.

Being that you're still at almost a 4 handicap, it's probably not going to be something you do often although it's possible. I mean, I shot a 65 once and haven't gotten close since, so it is possible for you to break par. For me it comes down to putting (as I'm sure it does with you). If I make some putts inside 10 feet, I'll shoot under. If I don't, I'll be a two or three over. It's a fine line between a great round and a mediocre round (all relative I know). In my 65 round, I just made everything I looked at that day; it helped too that every approach shot was inside of 8 feet.

when ever im under par coming into the last few holes i get really stupid, its a 50-50 shot for me, if im like 3 under with 2 to go il try to birdie in hitting driver on short par 4s and sometimes it works but alot of times i end up even

I have broken par on occasion, even in tournaments.

My game in particular is streaky. For example, I had a round with 8 birdies, almost 9, and only shot 1 under.

The key to the times I have broken par has been that everything is working... scrambling, ballstriking, but most importantly PUTTING!

Which part of China that you have been ? You should try , they are mostly very well maintain .

Regarding my home club, the distance is not an issue for me , but the greens are difficult and fast. Most are multi tiers . If you land wrong side of the green , it is going to cost you . I can break par on single 9 and i have done that many times. I just cannot carry the momentum on the 2nd 9 and blew the chance to break even par.
