Expensive mistake.....

Playing in a club competition a couple of Sundays ago I found a fairway bunker off the 15th tee and the best I could do (because of the lie) was use my 9 iron to try to make some progress towards the hole.
Played my shot, put my iron down on the ground and proceeded to rake the sand. Just as I had finished, a ball whistled overhead, guy had hit a horrendous slice from the next fairway. A little banter ensued, and we stood aside to let him play his recovery shot.
Four days later I go to get my kit ready for a game and realise my 9 iron is missing. In the confusion that had gone on during the previous match, I had completely forgotten to pick the club up.
Despite numerous phone calls to the club pro, and a visit to the "scene of the crime" it appears my trusty 9 iron has taken a hike. The other problem is that on that particular part of the course we get a lot of members of the public out walking their dogs or just strolling around and my guess is that one of them has found the club and is now using it as a threshing tool whilst they search for lost balls in the undergrowth. The area surrounding the bunker is cut grass, not semi rough so I know that somebody has picked it up. Been in touch with my supplier who can get me a replacement club to match, but it's going to cost me the best part of £80.00. Expensive mistake.
Just a reminder to keep an eye on your clubs!!

The good news is that you were not injured by the errant shot.



I just got home from the course. I found an iron left on the 9th green...laying right on the side of the green...not the fringe, but fully on the putting surface. It was a graphite shafted 10 iron (first time seeing a club like this) of a manufacturer I didn't recognize. I turned the club into the course marshall ten minutes later after holing out.

He was amused by the unusual stick as well.

Thats probably a club i never will lose (since i use it like 6 times a year) and even if - i have closet full of 3irons that i probably could bent to a 4

. I´m more prone to lose wedges but so far i ever got them back.

Lost the cleveland wedge in my signature but I got a new one. Wasn't cheap though

I lost my 4 iron on the course a couple years ago....It was fine because I couldnt hit it anyway and it gave me an excuse to get a hybrid.

Sorry this is late, but it may help you get your club back in the future.
Provided a decent human being finds it....

I have had trouble with the lables sticking for some reason.
Perhaps another piece of tape to help hold it on would work.

£80 for a 9i? No chance you can get one cheaper from eBay or some other store?

I've had a look but my clubs aren't "standard"....

Fitted with Nippon 950 shafts and one degree flat. I could always get a standard irons lie altered I guess but finding a matching one with the Nippon shaft would be difficult. A re-shaft would then bring it up to the cost of a brand new iron.

I've left my a club around the green a few times. Worst one was I left my 52º wedge outside the green. Hit my tee shot on the next tee into the woods and had to use a wedge to get it out of there. Realized my 52º was missing. Ran back and found it on the previous hole, the next group hadn't reached the green yet.

From that day I never put my club down in the fringe, rough or fairway again. If I need to use an iron near the green now I usually leave my putter so I can put my iron back before picking the putter out of my bag. If the hole is on the other side of the green and I would slow down play by doing this I will take both iron and putter. After hitting my chip I lay my iron down somewhere I can't miss it. On top of the flag or on the green, in the line I'll be walking from the hole to my bag, so I know I can't miss it.

I've also developed a form of OCD by checking I have all my clubs all the time at the course. I'd be really mad at myself if I left a club on the course. People that steal clubs should be banished forever. If I find a club I pick it up, put it in my bag, try to make contact with the groups in front of me. If I can't find someone that miss a club I'll take it to the pro shop, make sure they leave a note with it, explaining where I found it.

The biblical term "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you" fit on cases like these. Same goes with the other thread here where people get their balls stolen.

It was just careless on my part. There was a backup on a short par 4, and after i hit my shot I brought my club with me to talk to somebody on an ajoining hole for a few minutes. I put it down just left it there in the rough.
