I think I need a new putter since 3 putting is pretty common for me. Maybe I just suck, I don't know. What do I look for in a new putter? I hit some at Golf Galaxy and sometimes I sink some from different distance, some times I don't. Later I come back and I can't sink anything with the same putter. Some weight more, some have a different look at them. What do I look for?

I bought a training aid that has completely changed my putting scores. It is about $70. It is called the putting arc. (hopefully this doesn't break forum rules).
I loaned it to a friend and it also dramatically improved his putting. I used it at home on a carpeted floor for about 10 minutes/day for a week. When my putting starts heading south I just pull it out of the closet to get the form back. You won't regret buying it.

But to directly answer your question.....
I currently use a Voodoo putter and fell in love with it at the golf shop. Even on artificial turf in a store I believe you will recognize a good "feel" when you find it.

Good luck,
Mike

I would go back to Golf Galaxy to the putting area, then pick one putter at random you don't like and warm up with five strokes.

Then select five putters that you like the looks of, then hit five strokes with each one at different distances. The pick whichever one felt and performed the best regardless of the price.

If your putting stroke has issues you may want a lesson to evaluate your putting prior to purchasing a new putter, since if you test the putters with a bad technique then the putter you select may not be optimal. If you take a lesson you can ask the instructor what type of putter would be ideal for you so you can pick the correct putters to test.

2011 Goals:
* Improve club-head speed to 90 mph with the driver
* Ensure increased speed does not compromise accuracy
* Prevent overextending on the back-swing (left-arm is bending too much at the top)
* Relax arms initially at address ( too tense)* Play more full rounds (failed from 2010)

Definately go to a golf store and test out a bunch of putters. Pick the one that gets the ball rolling end over end consistently.

By the sounds of it your putter may not be the problem. If you're really inconsistent no matter what putter you use then it's probably your stroke that's giving you problems. Maybe you should work on making sure your putting stroke is solid and repeatable and then if you're still having problems then look at getting a new stick. If you have a good, repeatable stroke then finding the putter that's right for you will be a lot easier too.

Your skill level is the more likely cause of your 3 putts, not the putter!

Seriously though, if you are serious about improving, why not go and get properly fitted for a putter?

So many golfers are obsessed with getting fitted for drivers in the never ending quest for distance, yet the most used club in the bag, the putter, is often neglected.

Go get fitted, establish what kind of putting stroke you have and this will help to narrow down the style and set-up of putter you should be looking at.

In the bag...

Tough call.

Just get something that feels natural....allows you to address the ball in a comfortable and stable manner....repeatable stance/posture.

Get a putter that you can lag putt well with.

Get a putter that you can firm those knee-knocker short putts in with.

Get a putter that inspires your confidence.

When you find the one that you feel can do all three...you have a winner.

I would say you need to work on your putting stroke if your three putting alot.

A quote from Kris
...is that college bball really isn't "lower tier". The better teams have their rosters filled with guys who could play in the NBA. hell, guys used to come straight from high school to the NBA. I really don't think there's much of a difference skill-wise between the two.

I would give 'em a 2 handed hammer throw to see which one went the farthest after a 3 putt!

putting is all confidence just pick one you like. im on my 4th putter of the year

when u go to get a putter just remember

1. get the right one not the best named one like "scotty cameron" unless you can hit it

2. if you push it find a putter that is a little less ballanced. ex. odyessy 2-ball, ping doc17, scotty cameron futura

3. if you pull it get a putter that is better ballanced. ex scotty cameron newport 2, odyessy black series

4. get one with a comfy grip, that should be fairly high up on the priorities list. the putter is the second most used piece of equipment other than the ball.

5. intentionally hit a couple off the toe and heel because it shouldnt be a suprise to you when you hit it off the toe and it goes 1 and a half feet.

6. hit it on a course if possible

just be confident and believe that you can make every putt you have and i promice you wont 3 putt as much.

    • Day 446 - 2025-12-20 Woke up early and got some swings in before teaching putting all day. Looking forward to doing the same tomorrow.
    • It's miles better, though.
    • Went up to Erie for a lesson. I still need to work on how I shift my weight into my right leg and turn into the right leg. I extend it too much and externally rotate it too much. That all causes me to over rotate the hips and cause weight shift issues in the downswing. I need to feel like my right leg gains flex (it doesn’t), and my knee cap faces forward. The right hip sinks back and right. I need a need a ton more internal rotation. I still have some right elbow issues in the backswing. The path is better, but too much right elbow bend. I need to maintain width in the right elbow and let my right shoulder retract more, let’s say at A3, which helps keep that right arm extended.
    • Day 130 12-20 Today was just swinging what i had and go from there. Did focus on getting to lead side. Recorded swings for lesson  and hit real balls.
