I just finished watching the first seven 10-minute shorts plus the extra shorts that Jones did a few years later -- How to Break 90 -- and they are fantastic. Just watching Bobby Jones swing is pretty cool, but his playing tips are really right on the money too. Basically all golf instruction coudl simply repeat what he says in these little presentations they put together some 80 years ago with a bunch of Hollywood's then-leading stars, and you wouldn't have to do anything else as an instructor.

Plus, it's really cool watching Jones hitting his old persimmon 3-wood 245 onto the green 10 times in a row with this syrupy, easy swing.

I just recently bought the DVD. It's awesome. I was a Jones fan since I started playing. Such a huge figure in golf. He said a few things that really helped me. Once thing that I swore elevated my game significantly, at least at the time, was something like this "golf is an apparently right sided game played predominantly with the left side... until one truly learns this they will forever remain a duffer." I am sure I am not quoting him right but that's how I remember it. Interesting how much Jones' thoughts on the swing differed from Hogan who wanted "more right hands". Jones mainly didn't want to think about using the right side at all. I guess hardy would say it was because jones was a two planer and hogan was a one planer. Uggh. In any case, I like Jones and was never much of a Hogan fan. I think Nicklaus was a big jones fan. It's almost mind boggling to look at Jones address position, even now.. his left arm is so bent-- but it straightens out immediately. But it's so relaxed looking at address. Hmmm. He looked soo good at impact.

    • Day 27 - 2026-01-16 Played 18 with some of the usual "too many voices" going on when I'm working on swing stuff. Fun to get out in great bay area winter weather.
    • I know one recent college grad who's trying the same thing.  This guy was a Division III All-American, went on to play one year at Division I LSU, and is not working hard.  He won the Gulf States Open, a pro event, and made it to the second stage of the Korn Ferry Tour School late in the fall.  And didn't make the cut to get to the final stage.  I won't talk about swing or play stuff, but I believe there are a couple of things that are essential.  Obviously, talent, and drive, or work ethic.   I can't tell you how to do it, but you HAVE to get through it.  Golf is going to be your life, and it takes lots of work. Two more things that are really critical.  You'll need the facility to be able to practice.  My young friend stayed in Baton Rouge, as a past player on the team he can still use the LSU practice facilities.  And money.  Its unlikely you'll be able to work a full-time job and practice the way you will need to.  You'll probably need backing, from a parent, from a consortium of friends or club members., something to support you. Good luck, its not an easy path, but anything is possible.  Another young man from our area, Mike Brennan, just won for the first time on the "big" PGA Tour.
    • No one in the world is as smart as Phil thinks he is.
    • Get more comfortable with being uncomfortable. If you don’t like practicing then give up now. You don’t have the passion to become a pro. Unless that mentality changes you won’t do well under stressful situations.    Call the PGA Tour and ask. They probably have resources available.
