Curious as to your "loco" smily? Do you think the average pro ball speed is higher or lower than 165? Please explain.

There are guys with 175 and up for sure, but that's not "average." 165 is about average. My swing speed is 110 average which equates to about 160 mph ball speed depending on smash factor. Majority of pros swings are in the 107 - 130 area with the majority of them being 110 - 114. http://www.pgatour.com/2008/tourname...ats/index.html That shows the 2008 Bob Hope averages and leaders. Swing speeds have not changed on tour since last year so those numbers should still be accurate for today.

I think ya'll are losing an extremely large amount of perspective.

First the Finau brothers definitely do crush the ball, they made a point to say they hit the ball 340-345... of course they can't on demand drop a 385 yard bomb, but i bet if they really uncork one they can bang it out there.

secondly ... i know the internet wonders could have stuck everyone of those shots, but lets remember. Everything they're playing for resides on 1-3 shots a day.

In a stroke play event you can 3 put for bogey like Ed did and make up for it with a few solid holes.

Ed pissed away his chances with a 2 sub-par chips and an iron shot he missed the green with by ... 3inches, hardly the end of the universe in a 72 hole tournament.

Remember PEI ? what 4 people missed 3 foot putts that would make them immune? Even golf channel tour golfers bang home 3 foot putts haha.

How often do you think the folkes on the PGA who admit they have a problem with the head game (snedeker on 18 for the latest example), would survive if every tournament was a 1 shot closest to the pin?

Valid points. No doubt that waiting and waiting around and then 'do or die' on a few shots has to be quite nerve racking particularly when there is no flow to things. Remember, we only see the edited down version. And few of us ever face playing in front of cameras or even a small gallery.

I agree, it sucks to have 1-3 shots per day to determine your future on the show. But some of those guys egos need to be checked. Get off your high horses, sheesh.

I don't think it sucks; it is just the nature of the show and they know that going into it. People are right, it isn't the same in a stroke play tournament, but Big Break isn't a stroke play tournament.

completely agree.. but to say "oh they must be horrible at golf they didnt stick a 25yrd flop shot over a bunker" is extremely naieve given the circumstances

Finally got to watch the shows re-run last night. It was curious that the short shots all took a toll on the guys, but they have to be very good players I'm guesing to even 'make the cut'. Don't know what the requisites are to get choosen to appear, but I'm certain there are some. I would have liked to see the swimmer go a little further in the show, he wasn't as big an ass as I was expecting to see. His Big break was a Tuff Break!

I like the kind of pressure that is placed on these guys. It truly is far different than playing a round. Imagine hitting one chip shot for essentially 100K. Many amatuers wouldn't even make contact with that type of pressure. The one who will win will be the one who chokes the least. Kinda like ever golf tournament ever played.

Ed doesn't have the skills after watching two holes where he parred a shortish par 5 and was putting for bogey from about 10 feet he was clearly out classed, get back in the water Ed.

If everyone was swinging 165 and hitting straight, everyone would be hitting 350-400 per drive. Am I so wrong on that calculation?

I'm pretty sure you are confusing swing speed and ball speed

Please re-read what I've been saying all along. The average pros BALL speed is 165. The average pros SWING speed is around 110ish. Two totally different things. 125 is no where near "average" swing speed for a pro either. 125+ swing speed is the guys on tour who are the longest hitters, not the "average." Please double check your sources from your net search.

Man, my truck dosen't even go 125 mph...and by time I took a swing that fast, I'd be standing nekkit on the tee box..and the BIG Break would be my back!

In regards to the comments on the Finau kid being a head case or a bad putter... he could be both, but most of the time someone who hits the ball that far more than likely has problems with control. I'd say that's a more likely reason for not breaking through, in addition to putting like you said.


Also... driving the ball 387 is ridiculous, yes... but if I'm thinking of the right tournament, it was like the Utah Classic or something... where elevation is somewhere between 4,000 and 4,500 feet above sea level.

Anybody who hits the ball a decent distance who has ever played in high elevation can tell you how much further the ball can go if you really tag one and let it get in the air. I mean, the same drive at a place closer to sea level might still be 330-350 or more, which is still "stupid long," but it's not unheard of on tour.

it's worth it to point out ... the finau brothers are only 19 and 18 ... and have only been "pro" for 2 years. Not exactly a mellinium in the grand scheme of things.
