  1. 1. PGA Tour -- Pants, Shorts, Or It Depends?

    • Shorts, no matter what the consequences.

In the midst of this heat wave (110 degree heat index in Virginia today), I got to thinking about what it'd be like to have to play golf in this weather. Then I thought about having to play in long pants. Then I thought about having to walk in long pants. Then I thought about walking a PGA length course (7100+ yards) for four days, not counting practice rounds and pro-ams.

Do you think the Long Pants Only rule is an antiquated concept? Are you a traditionalist that thinks that long pants are the only way to go? Do you think that the sight of Lumpy Herron in bermuda shorts would produce the lowest Nielsen rating in history?

I voted "pants always" basically. These guys aren't playing shade-less golf courses. I walked 18 holes in the heat the other day. No, I wasn't carrying my bag, but neither are they. I have pants that allow a little breeze through but basically keep my legs in the shade. They're about as cool as shorts would be (the things they can do with modern fabrics).

I like the professional look pants offers, and with no negatives (i.e. "as cool as shorts"), I see no reason to move away from that.

Wow. I voted "Long Pants" too. Even though we have different preferences when it comes to putters, I'm glad we can agree on what should be covering out bottom halves. (By the way, you know that I am just kidding, right?).

I'm glad they let caddies wear shorts now, but I think the players should stick to pants. With the breathable fabrics apparel makers work with, there's not that much of a drawback to wearing long pants over shorts. And really, do you want to see John Daly, Lumpy, or even Charles Howell III in shorts? That can't be good for anyone!

I voted for long pants... I wear shorts when I play, so I guess it is a double standard - professionals vs general hackers, but that's jsut the way it is. If I were playing for a million bucks instead of for a quarter a hole, they could have me wear a tutu.

Pretty soon pros are going to start calling for a roll-back on the distance their pants must be until they can bring the "short" apparel back from obsolescence.

there some ladies on the LPGA that I would not want to see in shorts either, but you get to anyways.

You have a point, but there are still enough women on the LPGA who look good in shorts and skirts to make it all worth it.

I wonder if the women on the forum might prefer if the PGA players wore shorts.

Since my legs are the only visible part of my body that that look even remotely as good as 30 years ago I vote shorts. You could make a rule that you can either wear them all the time or not at all. That would make it interesting

I should start a poll "Are Michelle Wie's skirts too short?" I know what Rafi's vote would be.

It's always a moral dilema watching her play.

wearing pants isnt that bad. especially considering the fact that they are not carrying their own bag and just have to walk to their balls. and i agree with everyone who says it makes them look more professional.

Never a moral dilemma for me... I just enjoy the show. Also, Natalie G, Lorena, Christy K....

However, Laura Davies should be required to play in a Hazmat suit....

Lorena Ochoa? Really?

My buddy says she looks like a young Israeli boy. I can't see her any other way now. Was that politically incorrect?

    • 70 today. The number looks good but, the course is a par 67 (5,110 yards, 64.3/115.). While the 70 took quite a few good shots to achieve, I am not counting that as shooting my age.
    • Played our town’s executive course this morning. Everything is closing but for now Huron Hills remains open. #13 is shaped like an upside down backwards L (dogleg left). Only 231 yard par 4. Dogleg has a tree guarding the corner and a sand bunker guards the green for those cutting the dogleg. Tiny green. About 10 years ago or more I would try to cut the dogleg. The hole is so short that even if one tangled with the tree or was bunkered, par was likely and birdie was still on the table. Now in my 70’s, I just hit it straight and try to wedge it close for birdie. Today I screwed up and pulled my drive. I wandered around a bit when my ball was not in the bunker. Finally located it on the approach to the green. Almost chipped in and tapped in the 2 inches for birdie. Best unintentional shot of the week. 😲

    • Why wouldn't it have? It's not like you were playing it as a 145yd par 5 and made a 2 or something.  Or not like it was playing 50yds to a temporary green or something either.
