Last year I had made a mistake and bought the MP 60s because I got a good deal and they are great looking irons. I had them for less than 1 year and my index went from an 8 to a 11. I don't think you should buy the irons for the player you want to be. Buy something that fits your needs now and you can improve with. I don't have the time or money to play much more than 30 rounds a year and with the mizunos, if I mishit them just a bit they would come up 20 yards short.

By the way, I love my new irons. They are discontinued and an older model. A good mix of forgiveness and playability.

That is my .02. I am going to lose some money in the deal but I had to make a change. The Mizunos flight was not right for me and I lost almost a club. I have only had my new irons for 2 weeks and I can already see my scores are going to be better. I putted like a dog and shot my best score in months.

The less forgiveness a club has, the more you have to work on your ball striking, which isn't exactly a bad thing.

Your index going up 3 points is. Who has all this time? I have a 8 month golf season if that.

I would rather shot a 75 with the same ball striking than an 80 and use some "players" irons so I come up 25 yards short and have less than a 30% of getting up and down. This game is about number of shots. You wouldn't rather be an 11 than 16. A 7 instead of an 11??? I like getting away with my misses and getting an iron I can actually enjoy on most shots and not the 1 in 5 I actually pure. And for some real data. My index went down .5 in one revision. First time all season. I like that :)

My goal is to hit 100% of my shots pure. I'll never get there, but who says I can't try? And the lack of forgiveness is something I don't buy into either. I haven't played regularly with anything less forgiving than my MP-57's, but I have tried various blade irons. When moving from CGI to MP-57's I didn't notice any difference. When trying blades I feel the mishits more and they might not come up as far, but not 25 yards short.

The ball reacts to where it meets the clubhead, which is a two-way equation. Horisontally and vertically. With a consistent swing, hitting somewhat the same spot over and over is not impossible. And it's not like you have to hit on the pin of a needle or it'll go 25 yards short, every club has forgiveness, some just have more of it.

But it's up to each and everyone of course. I don't play golf to shoot low scores, I play golf to get so good that I can shoot low scores consistently. If I have to hit it bad in the progress, so be it.

Who says you can't get as low in handicap with a players iron? I haven't even mentioned type of clubs either, just that less forgiveness is not something that automatically jump your index by 3.

My index has gone from a 19.1 to 17.1 in 2 months so I must be striking the ball better....or maybe my course management has improved that I can know where or what to use. I know my putting has been sort of consistant (30-33)

I am going from experience. Maybe your MP 57s are much more forgiving than my MP 60s that I am selling. I thought they were very similar. But I know when I missed it off the toe at all I was coming up 25 yards short with what I KNOW was the right club.

I play golf for fun, I play to compete and challenge myself, I play to shoot the best possible scores I can. I had the irons I mentioned above and I found I was in very hard up and down situations often. Maybe I missed them worse than someone else of my same handicap level, not sure. But what I know is I shot my best score I have in 3 months after going to the range for 45 minutes to get a little feel for them and then having one of the worst putting days. That tells me something.

I just can't believe your goal or any golfers goal is not to score well. Having a great round is so much fun. And for me a great round is all about momentum. When I miss one and get it up and down it keeps it going. When I missed one with my old set I was in spots that it was unlikely even though my strongest part of my game is my shortgame. 25 yard pitches are hard to get close.

I know I will not in the forseeable future be any better than a 7 or so because of life obligations and money. But if I can shot in the 70s I sure will enjoy that one round a week I play and with what I am now playing I think I have a much better shot. That is what matters to me. Playing to how I expect to play more often than not.

What does this mean? Don't you have to shoot low scores to consistantly shoot low scores? That is why I changed.

Of course everoyone plays for lower scores, it's equal with a lower handicap. I have fun on the course, but I will never be satisfied with my game. It's fun to get up and down, but when I get one, I am more annoyed at missing the green than I enjoy getting the par. The most fun part of golf for me is to get better. Low scores is a product of consistently good play. I'd rather hit 18 GIRs and shooting 10 over than 5 over with 10 GIRs.

I am currently 95% focused on my long game, so a good and fun round for me is playing that part of the game well. Doesn't matter if I three putt all the way to the 19th hole.

To each there own. I love the short game the most of any part of golf. I will hit more greens than I used to as a product of my irons not punishing me anymore.

I will have more fun. I like the 70s.

I haven't met the 70's yet, but I'm sure I will love them when that moment arrives, which I hope won't be too far away.

They are sweet. Best of luck to you. If you hit 9 GIR/round you are one heck of a player FYI.

I miss them dearly and hope to meet on sunday in the cold cincinnati air. It is going to be a high of 50.

    • In terms of ball striking, not really. Ball striking being how good you are at hitting the center of the clubface with the swing path you want and the loft you want to present at impact.  In terms of getting better launch conditions for the current swing you have, it is debatable.  It depends on how you swing and what your current launch conditions are at. These are fine tuning mechanisms not significant changes. They might not even be the correct fine tuning you need. I would go spend the $100 to $150 dollars in getting a club fitting over potentially wasting money on changes that ChatGPT gave you.  New grips are important. Yes, it can affect swing weight, but it is personal preference. Swing weight is just one component.  Overall weight effects the feel. The type of golf shaft effects the feel of the club in the swing. Swing weight effects the feel. You can add so much extra weight to get the swing weight correct and it will feel completely different because the total weight went up. Imagine swinging a 5lb stick versus a 15lb stick. They could be balanced the same (swing weight), but one will take substantially more effort to move.  I would almost say swing weight is an old school way of fitting clubs. Now, with launch monitors, you could just fit the golfer. You could have two golfers with the same swing speed that want completely different swing weight. It is just personal preference. You can only tell that by swinging a golf club.
    • Thanks for the comments. I fully understand that these changes won't make any big difference compared to getting a flawless swing but looking to give myself the best chance of success at where I am and hopefully lessons will improve the swing along the way. Can these changes make minor improvements to ball striking and misses then that's fine. From what I understood about changing the grips, which is to avoid them slipping in warm and humid conditions, is that it will affect the swing weight since midsize are heavier than regular and so therefore adding weight to the club head would be required to avoid a change of feel in the club compared to before?
    • I think part of it is there hasn't been enough conclusive studies specific to golf regarding block studies. Maybe the full swing, you can't study it because it is too complicated and to some degree it will fall into variable or random.
    • Going one step stiffer in the golf shaft, of the same make and model will have minor impact on the launch conditions. It can matter, it is a way to dial in some launch conditions if you are a few hundred RPM off or the angle isn't there. Same with moving weights around. A clubhead weights 200-220 grams. You are shifting a fraction of that to move the CG slightly. It can matter, again its more about fine tuning. As for grip size, this is more personal preference. Grip size doesn't have any impact on the swing out of personal preference.  You are going to spend hundreds of dollars for fine tuning. Which if you want, go for it. I am not sure what your level of play is, or what your goals in golf are.  In the end, the golf swing matters more than the equipment. If you want to go to that level of detail, go find a good golf club fitter. ChatGPT is going to surface scan reddit, golfwrx, and other popular websites for the answers. Basically, it is all opinionated gibberish at this point.
