Working on compressing the ball & Hitting FAT.......

I wanted to work on ball striking and compresing the ball and keeping the hinge longer. Normally I take a little divet not the dollar bill and I hit it pretty good 8 iron 155, I need some help. Maybe I should leave it alone but I understand breaking into the 70's I need good ball striking . In trying to compress the ball today I was hiting it fat...........anyone have some advice??????????????

WTH Compressing the ball? Please explain this...
Actually I think you'll find a good short game will get just about any able bodied person into the 70's

I've had some fat shot issues recently and was reading Bobby Clampett's book, "The Impact Zone", to see if any of his techniques were relevant to the issue. He advocates aiming at a point a few inches ahead of the ball in order to make better contact. Perhaps doing that will get your swing to be a little more shallow and have it's lowest point slightly ahead of the ball.

2011 Goals:
* Improve club-head speed to 90 mph with the driver
* Ensure increased speed does not compromise accuracy
* Prevent overextending on the back-swing (left-arm is bending too much at the top)
* Relax arms initially at address ( too tense)* Play more full rounds (failed from 2010)

Ok I'm a newb so if this is dumb, I'm sorry. When you say ahead of the ball do you mean in reference to the swing of the club, or ahead of the ball in reference to your chest. EX. If it's in reference to swing of the club you would mean aiming more towards your 9 o'clock where as in reference to your chest it would be at 12 o'clock. Sorry if this is a dumb question, just started taking up the sport!

Where in reference to the ball is your divot typically (obviously before you started hitting fat shots)? "Compressing" the ball as you call it generally refers to ball first contact. If your divot happens after the ball, you're already compressing it nicely.

The key is to trap the ball against the turf by hitting it with a descending blow. Its been my experience that trying to hit down on the ball creates mayhem on a golf swing. I fixed the same problem by getting away from the term "compression" and embracing a "down and through" mentality. This made me get through the ball instead of hitting at it, and bettered my contact. Hope that helps.

It's impossible to tell how you hit the ball or what you feel when you call it a compression. You are not supposed to trap the ball against the turf. The club moves along the line of the ball, descending and reaching the bottom preferably around 3-4 inches in front of the ball.

If you can, a video would help. Have you tried moving the ball around in your stance? Try moving it more forwards or backwards.

I went to the range today and worked it out, with all the focus on compressing i wasn't clearing my hips. Theis helped and I also took little half swings to get the feel. thanks for the input

I am really not being a smart a$$ I just don't understand what you mean by compressing the ball. In my mind compressing the ball is not something you have any control over, once the club makes contact the ball will be compressed regardless of your swing mechanics. Just curious.

I don't like either. The feeling of a good shot to me is where the ball feels like butter and the club just pass through it. The feeling of compression and pinching it between the clubface and the turf is something I get when coming steeply down and casting the club to the ball. Feels like the ball is popping out. On a proper shot, the clubhead just passes through the location of the ball and sends it off.

I thought the feeling of compression was right, but that was until I learned how a good shot felt.
