i don't think i'm that old (55) but i am really getting some aches and pains. i've had knees scoped years ago so i am used to that. glucosamine and chondroitin help with that as well as 200 mg of ibuprophen before each round.

but now i have this ache in my middle knuckle of my left hand. ouch! back stiffness that make tieing my shoes tricky.

any of you guys or gals out there have similar problems and if so what do you do to make them go away. for at least 4 hours.

You hit the nail on the head with glucosamine & advil. I really try to stretch for 5-10 mins prior to hitting warm up balls.

Ibuprofen is my leetle friend. As long as you check with your doctor, you can take up to 600mg safely..with food. Just don't make it a habit.

It affects some peoples stomach, but I know what you are saying. I usually have a banana with mine. I'm sure the potassium I get doesn't hurt either.

I'm a pretty healthy 52, but suffer a bit from arthritus in the fingers and carpal tunnel. I don't mind the little bit of muscle soarness afterwards. Just means I have been working them a bit. As an after thought, I find that paddling or flat water kayaking is a great way to excercise those arm and shoulder muscles.

If you stretch properly and warm up before you play it should help. Also, drink at least two glasses of water before you play. Water carries oxygen to your muscles. The more depreciated of oxygen = the more stiffness = the more pain.

The finger pain could be anything.

I will be 53 in December and I have also experience mostly back stifness and some pains.

I have been exercising 7 days a week by walking or jogging for 30 minutes everyday and whenever my back is stiff after 10 minutes of walking my back feel better.

If you workout on a regularly with just walking with 30 minutes everyday you will benefit from the blood circulating and helping the healing process for any other pains and aches you might have.

Your quality of golf will improve especially with endurance on the back nine.

You should consider going through a stretching program when not playing golf. I'm 41 and took up a stretching routine a month ago to improve my shoulder turn. After going through the program I've noticed after spending time at the range I don't have any soreness or stiffness (100 balls yesterday).

I'm using the Roger Frederick's "Golf Swing Secrets" DVD, which is tailored for an older audience. They are a little pricey but the programs are decent. It comes 3 DVDs for the stretching program, strength program, and swing drills.

2011 Goals:
* Improve club-head speed to 90 mph with the driver
* Ensure increased speed does not compromise accuracy
* Prevent overextending on the back-swing (left-arm is bending too much at the top)
* Relax arms initially at address ( too tense)* Play more full rounds (failed from 2010)

Well said.

We should also keep strengthening our muscles while keeping up with the stretching. While I have the golf channel on, I have some 10lb weights that I use to keep up with some muscle tone. I beats holding the remote and doing nothing.

I know it was said before, but stretching is the most important thing. Spend at least 15min everyday even if you are not playing, this will help you in numerous aspects of life not just golf.

I noticed that the post about drinking water uses a baby as an avatar so I will assume he does not know that old men pee way too much to load up on water before playing. I peed four times next to my cart yesterday and that was with two stops at the clubhouse and I only had one cup of coffee since waking up!
I have been using skelaxin, (a muscle relaxer), and a Black Russian when I go to bed. My very strong grip makes my forearms hurt along with all the regular stuff.

Salonpas patches work for temporary localized pain relief, like w/a tweaked muscle. Available at most drugstores. Cleaner, no odor, lasts 4 or 5hours. Don't know if Bengay patches are similar.

Flexiblity as well as muscle ENDURANCE, not strength will help you pain.

There is no age limit to being flexible, you are just going to have to work on it harder than if you had started earlier in life... but you can reach a point where most of your pain is gone.

    • Ok, I'm trying to find a feel to hit a consistent ball flight (irons).  My current predicament.  1. I try to do the arms down stuff better, with the club feeling like it is way behind me more. It's just a cluster of results. Most of the time, I can't get any speed on the swing. If I get my arms down faster, I just throw them out.  2. I focus all my attention on turning better. Pushing off with my left leg and getting my right side through better. On the DTL view, this doesn't produce anywhere close where the hands and club should be. The result is usually ball first contact, lower ball flight, more centered contact.  At this point, I am going with option 2. Stop thinking about what the hands do. Just make a shorter backswing, keep it wide, turn through. Somehow, the club head finds the ball. My focus is so much on just making sure I turn, it's like, "Oh, that contact was better.... Oh, that bell flight looks playable." If not, I will just be practicing my entire summer.
    • Nope, they spent too much money. They are in over 28 million on the football roster and related NIL compensation at this point. Boosters associated with any Texas college football team has HUGE sway. The AD is between a rock and a hard place. They put a lot of money into Sorsby, at the chance of winning a NC this year. If you move on, you basically wasted a lot.  This is why Ohio State wants 3 QB's they feel can start. That is why the backups the past 5 years at some point transfer. Texas Tech has no backup near the quality of Sorsby. If they move on, they are screwed for 2026.
    • Maybe there's something I still don't understand about the situation. Wouldn't Texas Tech do itself a favor to move on from Sorsby at this point?
    • Day 281 6-10 Full swing, fast, getting low point ahead of "towel".  Working on flow during this seems to help.
