I just got back in the game after a long layoff. I was a 10 hdcp when I quit (was taking the game way to serious) and sold all my clubs with the exception of my putter. I started playing again almost 2 months ago when I bought some used clubs.

The first thing that needs to go are the irons. I am sure the Ping i3's were great in their day, but I need some newer technology. I used to play TM R7's and I was able to hit a 7 iron 160 to 165 yards consistently. With this old Ping set, I am having trouble with my ball striking and even when I think I hit it well, I am having trouble getting the 7 iron to go 140. I need an iron that will help me use less club for my approach shots and par 3's. My last round I was using my Rescue for any shot from 180 to 135 because I have zero confidence with these i3's. Believe it or not, the results were pretty good lol.

I need to get a "game improvement" set as I do not have much time to practice. I hate the range anyway.....would rather play.... . I have narrowed it down to 3 choices.

1. Cobra S9
2. Taylormade Burner
3. Ping G15

I have demoed these clubs off a mat into a net at Golfsmith, but that has not helped me make a choice. The Cobra's are the cheapest and seem to be a good solid club. I have a Cobra driver and it has been the best one I have ever owned. The PING's are the most expensive , but felt awesome. The Burner's feel good too and are in the middle price range wise. I didn't have any trouble getting any of them up in the air.

Anyone who has any experience with playing these irons mentioned and could give me some input would truly be appreciated.

Thanks

Of those three, I would say go with the Taylor Made Burners if you're looking for distance. When I was demoing clubs (although I didn't try the Pings), the Taylor Made's were consistantly giving me 10 yards more distance than other brands.

What I Play:

Driver: R9 460
4 Wood: G15

Hy: Callaway FT 3Hy

Irons: AP1 4-PW

Wedges: Vokey 52* & 60*, Mizuno MP-T 10 58*

Putter: Newport Studio Select 2.7

Ball: Nike One Vapor

Within these these, I'd say the G15s.
But on a general scale, I'd say check the Srixon I701, they're really cheap right now on Edwin Watts, or the Mizuno MX-200s, I think they would suit your game.
My achievements:
Eagles: 0
Birdies: 18
Best Round: 89

Honestly, I'd say distance is the last thing one should worry about when selecting irons, but of the three I'd go with the Cobras. I'd also consider some PING G10's, can be had for $599 new and were still made in Arizona.

Why not go for another set of R7's? THey are around $400 now.

Judging by what you said, I'd go with the burners.

They are a half inch longer than most clubs, and they are strong lofted like crazy... but good luck with anything inside 140 yards.

You wont have a club for it. And that is the problem with those irons.

Thanks for all the input thus far. You know, just getting me another set of R7's is not a bad idea, since I really liked those irons. I guess I was thinking about getting the latest, but I will definately consider going back to the R7's. The Burner's kind of concern me with the extra length since I am short at 5'8". Inside 9i or PW distance is really not a problem for me because I am good at and really like the 3/4 and 1/2 swing shot. Heck, I used my rescue for 135 to 180 yard shots in my last round and scored an 81 (lil' luck involved of course).

I hit the G10's (Not much of a difference from the G15 irons if you ask me). There is also a set of G10's for sale in the auction area you might wanna take a look at. One thing to think about with Pings are the fitting. I bought a used set and I was worried about the COLOR not fitting but I called Ping and they told me for only $18 bucks I can send them in and they would change the fitting color of the entire set.

I'm liking my current set, Wilson Staff Di-7's. Strong lofted (PW is 43*!), super forgiving cavity backs and a real crisp feel on good contact. Just a heads up since they weren't on your list!

check out dicks they have a deal for sumo2 5900 i got mine with a proforce shaft for 139 and i easily crank it 280 with a slight fade, between the the three you listed i would go with the Cobra S91 ProS with the matrix ozik shaft, the shaft by itself cost as much as the club does. for irons check out MIZUNO's mp series

I am sure the Ping i3's were great in their day, but I need some newer technology.

Are you sure? look at my handicap and my signature...

With that said, everyone is free to spend their money as they please... my recommendation, keep the clubs that you had before you quit. Spend some money in lessons. Work out, play, practice... and then, after you have reached a plateau, consider some equipment changes.

Please don´t swing while I´m talking !!

I am sure the Ping G10's are some great sticks, but I just can't get over that orange color......ugh.....and the Rapture's are even worse. I think I might be leaning more towards going back to the R7's unless I can be convinced that there is something better.

If you have a problem of slicing the ball then the ping g10 would give you the most distance since it has a slight draw bias

Maybe check out the NEW R9's....

BTW, I also liked the Burners. As I was testing many irons over a couple of weeks at the range, they were my favorites, until I did my final comparisons with the R7's. I actually hit the R7 long irons a little better than the Burners. Not sure why...just a personal thing, I guess.

With the price difference between the two sets, it was an easy decision for me to go with the R7's.

i actually really like that satin matte finish ping has on their clubs...i hate shiny chrome things...the i10's were on my short list before i decided on my nike cci forged. i agree with whoever said it before though...get yourself a new set of r7's. they are a known quality...you built your game up on them, who's to say you cant get back or further with them again.

I think the Burners are out. Don't think I will like the longer shafts and they are still a little pricey. The PINGs are out too as I do not want to spend the coin for the G15's.

I have found a lightly used set of Cobra S9's and TaylorMade R7's that I am watching right now on EBAY. Thanks guys. You have helped me knock it down to 2 options.

I wish there was someone on the forum who can give me some insight on the Cobra's since I already know what to expect from the R7's.

    • It is on HBO, so maybe get a month subscription to binge watch after the season is almost over.
    • Yea the first season was great. I never played the second game so I am basically blind to most of the story (with some exceptions). I have to figure out how to watch it though since I don’t have cable anymore.
    • Causation does not equal correlation. Just because he "got jacked" doesn't mean that was what caused him not to win a major from 2015-2024.  There are so many reasons other than "he was too jacked to make good swings under pressure" as to why he didn't win from 2015-2024. First, winning a major is HARD. It requires a lot of luck and things to go your way over the course of 72 holes. Second, there were so many good players that came along and won majors during that time period. The longer time goes on the harder and harder it becomes to win because the skill level of professional golfers as a whole increases over time. Third, sometimes you straight up get beat, like in 2022 Rory lost to Cam Smith who shot an 8 under 64 in the final round. Rory shot a bogey free 70 and hit every single GIR.  There were plenty of other things besides "he got too jacked to make good swings under pressure" as to why he didn't win from 2015-2024.  In fact, since the 2015-2016 season, Rory has been inside the top 10 in Strokes Gained Tee to Green EVERY SINGLE SEASON. Think about that for a second. 9 straight seasons he was in the top 10 of a key statistical area measuring full swings and you're trying to argue that he was too jacked to make good swings under pressure while offering no facts or stats that support your claim in any way?? C'mon man that's a horrible take.
    • Caught up on the last two. The flow is going great. I enjoyed episode 4 with the hated drills. Good talk. I have not been interested in podcasts in quite some time until this one.
