I play TP Reds...I picked this ball after rounds or trying what seems like every ball possible (Pro V1 and V1x, Tour i and Tour ix, z star and z star x, bridestones, nike tour ones, tp red and tp black) For me the tp red just had that best combination of distance and feel around the greens...I didn't pay much attention to test numbers or anything like that, just how i felt playing the ball. but doing some reading on the ball has left me quite confused about how the TP red and TP black actually differ. for instance, the tp black has a firmer cover and a bit harder feel but is supposed to spin more around the greens than the tp red, but that seems to be contradictory to all other brands (v1s, tour i's, tour one/one d, etc) where the softer covered balls checks up more. am i confused about the physics of golf ball spin, or is there an explanation for my tp red vs black confusion? in either case i don't plan on switching balls, i've shot my two lowest rounds ever with tp reds, so they are staying in my bag for a while.

Yeah TM didn't do a very good job of making the differences clear or easy to find. I believe on the box it says something to the effect of "for higher spin players" on the reds and "for lower spin players" on the blacks, versus the industry standard of referring to the balls themselves as high spin or low spin.

I think I remember a graph floating around somewhere that suggests that the TP reds are higher spin and lower trajectory when compared to the blacks, but I could be wrong. At any rate, the reds are quality golf balls for sure.

Golf digest or some other rag did a big test of golf balls. Off of a 56 degree wedge by a robot the blacks had only 25rpm more spin than the reds. The reds launched 1.34 degrees lower than the blacks off of the same wedge.

Backwards. And I'm talking about only the LDP models:

The TP Red spins less and has a lower trajectory. The TP Black spins more and has a higher trajectory. Virtually every other ball that has a "softer/spinnier" version follows the pattern the Pro V1/V1x follow: The Pro V1 spins more and has a lower trajectory. The Pro V1x spins less and has a higher trajectory. The Tour i spins more and has a lower trajectory. The Tour ix spins less and has a higher trajectory. The B330s spins more and has a lower trajectory. The B330 spins less and has a higher trajectory. Etc.

Ah, yeah the review posted here isn't for the newer LDP balls.

Yes I am confused by it all too. The Labels on the box "for Higher spinning players" is not clear to me - ie does this mean if you spin the ball allot you like this as it takes some spin off? or if you like to spin the ball, you'll love this one as it spins like hell.

Regardless I love both the black and red, I am gaming the red these days as I find it a bit longer then the black, but seems to spin about the same for me.

The TP red is designed for high spin players that want to lower their spin, compares to the Titleist Pro v1x. The TP Black is for low spin players who want to get more spin. Hope this answers your question.

i found iacas's definitive guide to this issue on this thread: http://thesandtrap.com/forum/showthr...t=22038&page;=3

its just weird b/c the prov1/v1x has become the gold standard of tour balls, that everything has to be benchmarked compared to them...which makes it difficult when a company has two tour balls that behave nothing like the prov's. with the tp's, you have a ball that feels like prov1 in terms of how soft it is but spins like a prov1x on the short irons and a ball that is hard like the prov1x but spins like prov1...

the terms for high spin players and low spin players is indeed a poor way of marketing the golf ball. they should go by Snells descriptions of the balls and market them based on feel (TP red for softer feel and TP Black for firmer feel)...but i guess that too would be kind of confusing...

    • I am listening to 23rd Street.  24 hours a day of cars, trucks, planes, sirens, and neighbors who start lawn mowers at 6:30am. I try to drown it out with 7,600 WAVE music files on a huge USB drive.  Mostly 1950's through 1990's music.
    • Thanks! Evolvr, for sure. My indoors setup is pretty close to ready. I want to add a few more lights as it's a pretty dark place to begin with (old barn). Plan to use my iPhone 14 Pro, 720p 240 FPS. I think I got a tripod somewhere, but I nail everything down so I'll make a small box I can just plop the phone into. That way I know it's always in the same spot and level. How does the setup look in terms of angles and stuff.  I saw that topic and bookmarked it for later. A technique where you want the head to move forward and down? I've been doing that for twenty years! (not on purpose) 😛 Looks fun, I'll certainly try it out. £7000. That's certainly "down the line". What would be a good price? Thanks. I'll probably hold off until at least winter comes and see where we're living at that point. For the next six months I'll combine indoor practice with the range, which helps.
