Thanks all. I guess the #3 wood is unavoidable.
I'm having my next lesson this Sunday, I'll try to rent those hybrids again and hit them in front of my instructor and discuss it with him.
I guess what'd be optimal would be to have 2 hybrids to serve as long irons replacements (as opposed to short woods replacements ).

Considering the loft on my #5 AP1 (25º) and that the extra #4 is 22º and the #3 is 20º, that my ball flight with my #5, #6, #7 is reasonably high, what could be a sound choice for 2 hybrids below my #5 iron ? 24º and 21º ?

(btw, looks like the Japanese made AP1s have a slightly different loft config than the US models : http://www.titleist.co.jp/htm/news/2009_ap1.shtml scroll down for the table)

Typically a 2H will replace a 5w.

Agree and Disagree... I have a 16* hybrid that I reshafted... instead of the 40.5" shaft, I went with a 42" shaft (110 gram ozik). I hit this thing further than I have ever hit a 3 wood (off the deck).

I also carry an 18*, 21* and 24* hybrids... no woods at all. I lengthened the 18* a tad as well. Do I suggest you do this... no... not even close. I did it because I knew what lofts and lenghts would get me the yardage I wanted out of those clubs (190, 205, 220, 240). If I wer you I would start with one or two hybrids just outside your 5 iron range and get comfortable with them... then add as needed. I would also suggest not getting the 909H because of the open face. Go with a hybrid that is square... thats the only way you are going to get any true feedback from your swing.

How much did you gain from the shaft change on the hybrid? Just wondering because down the line I may do this as well.

I used to carry a 19* and 21*. Swing is different now, went from 6 to 9 (couldnt play for a year and a half) Have to change the club configuration now.... Point is, you may have to play around with it for a while till you figure out what works best for you. I jumped on the hybrid train when they first came out and will never go back to my 3 iron.

Here's my instructor's take:
As we haven't worked on using woods yet, it'd be foolish to choose one vs the other (as in hybrids vs woods) already. One thing is clear, he says there's no need for me to challenge myself with a #4 iron at this point. Once my abilities increase, perhaps I could reconsider, but not now.

He however strongly believes in hybrids, thus he suggested that I bring a couple of hybrids with different lofts next time we meet so we can see how it goes.

So I guess that once again, like everything in golf, patience is of the essence

Thanks all for the input. I'll keep this thread bookmarked so that when the time is right I can bump it up and continue the conversation.

15yds easy... could be a tad more. I think it has to do with both the length and the weight of the shaft.

Dana Quigley and Allen Doyle like to point out that they each carry four hybrids and have made 15 plus million dollars each.
If you find them easier to hit than long irons, I say go for it. They were designed to be easy to hit and for most players they are. I only carry one (3) as I tend to hit my 4 & 5 irons well but the 3 iron was always tough. I love my 3 hybrid and would never switch back.
