With that said, I was curious what the standard yardage gap is for people playing here. I seem to have a bit of discrepency between my clubs. Here are the rough yards I hit each of my clubs:

58* - 90 yards
52* - 110
PW (46*) - 130
9 - 145
8 - 155
7 - 170
6 - 180
5 - 195
4 - 205
3H - 225

I play with x-22 tour irons (don't know if that makes a difference. It just seems to me that there is a lot of yardage issues as some are as close as 10 yards and others are 20 yards.

Anyone have any thoughts as to what's going on? Is this normal? My clubs distance separations used to be in 10 yard increments, which was easier to gauge what to hit, but now it seems like I have a lot of gaps between irons.

Thanks!

Hello timastyle,
I think you and i had this converstion before. 10-15 yds between clubs is absolutely normal, and it should be fairly consistent between clubs.
I know some of this will sound like pure BS but its true. #1 You will find for whatever reason you will be more comfortable with certain clubs, and will tend to hit them a little longer. #2 As you use your clubs the lofts can change enough to make 5yds of distance. Just take the questionable clubs to a pro shop and they can fix any incorrect lofts.(usually only a couple of dollars per club) #3 One variation I see is from your 52* to you PW. There is 6 degrees of loft variance betwwen the clubs. Normal clubs are 4 degrees between each club. therefore if you are averaging 15yds. each club up, and are hitting your PW 130 theoretically you should hit the 52* around 22.5yds less or 107.5yds and you quoted 110yds actual whitch would be correct.
Lastly, when you gauge your clubs for average distance, try only doing two clubs per session with 25 - 30 balls each averaging your exact distances. Retreive your distances with an accurate measuring device. The reason only guage two clubs at a time is fatigue will cause inaccurate numbers. If I missed anything I know some of these guys here can further you in the right direction. Good Luck!

Hello timastyle,

I dont' recall about us having this conversation before. If we have, sorry for the duplication. In regards to your #2 item, with my irons being cast irons, can they still change lofts? Also, I've only had them 6 months and have been hitting the same distances. My wedges are a Vokey for the 58* and CG14 for the 52. I have been hitting them the same distance since day 1 (this is not to say that the clubs didn't come a degree off from what the manufacturer specs).

I never thought about your advice the gauging the distances between clubs, but I really do like the idea of taking only 2 clubs to the range and hit about 25 balls each to get a more accurate reading on the gaps. I just don't have anything to accurately gauge it. Anyone else's thoughts would be really appreciated as well.

Some launch monitors, Trackman and Ping systems that I know of, have a gapping program in the software.

This allows you to accurately establish your gapping and identify any inconsistencies.

I apologize sir, though I did most recently have an almost identical conversation with another forum member regarding gaps and distance. I tell most people if they don't have a GPS to measure their shots to go pick up a cheap distance wheel. You can pick one up for $12-15 around here, and be sure it measures in feet. Find an open area or field and start hitting shots. Thry to keep your swing consistant, don't worry about hitting a target (just pick an object in the horizion to aim at for reference). Hit your 25-30 balls, measure to your closet ball then your furthest (make a note of the distance of the majority of your balls. 80% will be about the same distance) Add your short distance to your long distance then divide by 2 and this average shoud be fairly close where the majority of your shots lie. Now you know your average/your longs/and shorts. Keep this somewhere for reference on a small card.
Again I apologize for mistaking you for someone else.

I got the club lofts

(inserted in blue) from the Callaway 2009 Pocket Reference Guide . Not sure why you would have the "gaps." Maybe 7-6-5 irons are those certain clubs you hit a little better, as lcfd42 suggests.

You hit my yardages and splits almost exactly. After the 5 iron I'm hybrid and 3 wood but still about the same. This is all for an 85% swing. My norm. The gaps and distances change if I go for it . Or go to a 75% knockdown. That allows me to overlap club distances. Trajectory and roll out control.

    • Nothing exposes low point control, and for that matter the general quality of ball striking like tight lies. Lol! I am at a crossroad. My days of playing with a super strong left hand grip are coming to an end it seems. I'm finding it increasingly difficult to maintain proper face control through impact as the club face naturally wants to turn over. The quality of strike and ball flight difference when I weaken the grip is stark. Problem is a weaker grip is at odds with my poor sore left forearm which I have been nursing for last few days after 3 days of demanding golf. As of now I will continue my 'transition' to a weaker grip with woods and hopefully my forearm will condition as I go along. Maybe someday I'll get to a normal address with irons too.
