I finished up my first semester of college on Thursday, and made the hour and half drive home that day. When I got back my dad and I went to a place called the golf warehouse which is were all the local golf shops sell their old merchandise from last season. I found a brand new Scotty Cameron Red X3 35''. It was on sale for $150 and another 10 percent off of that so after it was all said and done I bought a brand new Scotty for $135! I am so excited to hit the links already, too bad it is cold and snowing in Minnesota.

My question to all you golf fans out there is your story behind your first Scotty Cameron?

Got back into golf after a 25 year layoff. Got reading on the web about putters and thought I'd try a Cameron putter. Bought a Studio Style and played with it for about three rounds and sold it. It just didn't suit me. I think 4 degrees of loft is too much and the grip ridiculously thin - not that that's hard to change. Now I get a bit nauseous seeng all the "Tour Use Only" and GSS nonsense and fetishism about headcovers, but hey, I'm not saying I wouldn't like a black 009. I have ben gaming an Odyssey Black series 1 (non insert) and a plain old Ping Anser and now a Nike Unitized Tiempo. IMO all three of these putters are superior in feel to an OTR SC, but that's my opinion only. Pride of ownership in golf is not to be underestimated, so, whatever floats your boat!

In the race of life, always back self-interest. At least you know it's trying.

I got a Studio Stainless Newport 2.0 in my senior year of high school (2004). It has been in the bag ever since. I have considered switching a few times, but I know the occasional bad putting day is my fault. I have made a lot of clutch putts with it over the years. Two 28-putt rounds during my club championship this summer helped bring home the title!

Any suggestions on what a good starter Scotty might be?

I like the look of the California Coronado, do you see it being a lot harder to use than the Monterey from the same range?

Well- it all depends on look and what feels good by my pro seems to think most people would benefit from a face balanced putter. So the squareback #1 or the Newport 2.7 would be ones to look at.

Why would you post a picture of an Odyssey putter in a Cameron story post?

I bought my S/S Newport 2.5 from International Golf a few months ago for.... $80! A steal in my eyes.

In my (crossing my fingers for Syracuse Orange Cart) bag:

Walter Hagen 3 metal

My first (and only) Scott was a Newport 2 Mid-Slant. I used it for about 8 months and never felt comfortable with it. It's probably my least favorites putter out of the last 3-4 I've owned.

Congats on completing your first semester! Each one will pass quickly and before you know it, it is over.

Congrats also on your first Scotty. I have been gaming a Scotty for some time and love all of mine. Sounds like you got a good deal as well which makes it even better. Enjoy your putter and your break from school.

My first Scotty was a Red X5 that I bought for $185 new on EBAY. I wanted to try a mallet, but I wanted a small one, not the bigger, high MOI stuff like the Sabertooth or Craz-E. It felt so good, I immediately swore off all insert putters and became a Scotty convert, purchasing and selling (in order to buy others) many more.

My Tools of Ignorance:

I used to have a Scotty. I had the Studio Style Newport 2, not the Studio Select. Kind of expensive tho so i wouldnt recomend it as a first putter. I'll give you 1 guess of why i dont have it anymore and now have a Odyssey Putter.......................................................................................................................... ......................................................................................................... If you guessed it was stolen out of my garage you are right and win a shiney new golf ball. Luckily my whole bag wasn't stolen because it was in the house. The putter was in the garage with the practice putting green. I hate thiefs. I will eventually go back to the Scotty because they really are great putters, the only problem is my buddy gave me this Odyssey and i have been hitting everything. I hit a few 40 footers this season a ton of 20+ footers and everything from 10 feet in is a gimme. So theres no way im getting rid of this putter till it breaks or it starts acting up. Its a ugly boat but its been doing great, so untill something happens i cant see me getting a new one. But when i do it will be a Scotty again. Most likely the same one that was stolen.

I'm going to give you a little advice. There's a force in the universe that makes things happen. And all you have to do is get in touch with it, stop thinking, let things happen, and be the ball.

This may be a stupid question but is there any real difference between a scott cameron putter or odyssey than anything else, other than feel? Its not going to make more putts than a 10 dollar putter from Wal Mart, so why is it SOO much better?

    • Day 11, 1/11/26.  Today was putting, along about 6' of carpet, with coins on the ground to keep me cognizant of what I'm doing.  I think this is the at-home drill from LSW. (Ugh, missed two of the last four days -- 1/10 and 1/8)
    • Day 9: 2026.01.11 Hit some balls at the range, concentrating on weight distribution at address, got some on film.
    • Day 468 - 2026-01-11 Loooooong day. Did some work in the patio door (as a mirror) when I got home.
    • I caught a video on this driver; the face tech seems crazy. Looking at the heat map for ball speed, hitting it basically anywhere on the face only loses a few percent ball speed. The surprising and counter intuitive part to me was that for flat faced clubs, ball speed loss is directly proportional to distance loss. For clubs with bulge and roll this is apparently not true. The surprising part of that story being that the max distance potential looks to be a tiny pee sized area for this driver, and I feel in general for drivers. The counter intuitive part being (the myth?) that blade irons have a pee sized sweet spot and missing that tiny spot causes dramatic losses. And that modern drivers, maybe 2017 on, have massive sweet spots and are ultra forgiving. Where in reality, if this heat map data is valid and reliable, it might be a bit of the opposite. This insane tech driver appears to have a pea sized "sweet spot" while Mizuno Pro 241 irons are 28% more forgiving compared to the average of all clubs measured. Not compared to other players irons, compared to all clubs from all categories, players to SGI! The Pro 241 being essentially just a solid chunk of metal with no "tech" at all. Which for me devolves into a whole mess of what is forgiveness really? And in measurable and quantifiable results how many yards, or feet, does that translate into?
