I am going to be gettting TaylorMade R9 TPs and I need to decide if I am going to get a 4 iron or not. My bag set-up will be driver, 3 wood, 3 hybrid, 4 hybrid, 52* and 58* and obviously my putter. Now my questions is should I get the 4 iron since I will have a 4 hybrid. I know the 4 iron will go different distance than the 4 hybrid. If I don't get the 4 iron, then what should I get to fill my bag up with 14 clubs. Thanks for any help.

Haha. My 5 Wood is my least favorite club in my bag. I don't even know why I even keep it in my bag...I haven't used it in months.

Anyway, I would go with the 4 Iron but if you decide not to take the four iron, I would add maybe a low lofted PW(maybe 46°) or a high lofted LW(maybe 62°).

18 Holes--80 @ Carroll Meadows Golf Course(+9)

I was thinking about adding a 64 degree wedge but, I thought I might get myself in more trouble with that wedge. I just thought I might use it when I don't need to and end up worse off. But, who knows it could end up working for me.

EHS, you are changing the way you play. I noticed you didn't list any current FW. But after this change you'll have a 3W and 2 Hybrids. I'm thinking you might want that 4i around in case you have to take longer than you like to get used to the new setup. Couldn't hurt. Besides the more complete a set is the higher the resale value later.

It ain't bragging if you can do it.

The reason I don't have a FW in my sig is because I already got rid of my old FW and my old Hybrid.

So the new additions are the 2nd Hybrid and the 52* wedge. Then I'd still say get the 4i. Would you be willing to try adding more wedges as someone suggested? Me I think Pelz is right about knowing how far each will go with a certain backswing but like so many old Pros two wedges is enough for me. I'll make them work when I need to.

I also have a 4i but it's not in the bag now because I'm trying 3 hybrids.

It ain't bragging if you can do it.

I would be more than willing to add another wedge. Sometimes I think when it comes to wedges having less is better for me. It basically decides what I have to do and there are no second guessing. But, I am not set on that attitude as I said earlier, I would be more than willing to add another wedge.

Bingo. Who wants to buy a used set that starts at 5-iron? Okay, maybe a lot of people, but sure as heck not me.

Get the long irons - maybe even the 2 and 3 if available and affordable. Hit them at the range too. It'll make the 5-iron feel like a wedge.

21* is not a loft for a 5 wood but more of a 7 wood... isn't it ?

The 21* Spalding 5-wood I have in a bag in the basement says otherwise. The 19* Titleist sitting in the same bag agrees with you. The persimmon 5-woods are staying out of it.

    • We had a member of our senior club who developed a mental block on pulling the trigger. I played with him to see what the membership was talking about. I timed him a few times when he would get over the ball. 45 seconds. He knew he had a mental block and would chide himself, “Just hit it!” Once on the green he was okay and chipping was a bit better. It was painful to watch him struggle. Our “bandaid” was to put him in the last tournament  tee time with two understanding players. We should have suggested to him to take a break from our tournaments. I agree with the idea that when a player realizes they have a problem, the answer is to go fix it and not return until they are able to play at an acceptable pace.
