I'm looking at getting a new Driver. Currently I hit the R7 Driver and I have loved it since the day I got it. I do have money burning a hole in my pocket and the Driver is the next thing on my list to replace. So the question is should I buy the 09 Burner or Should I Get a high end exotic shaft put in my existing Driver.

Thanks

4H - Taylormade

I would say to go get fit on a launch monitor- I have been continually surprised hot much this helps and often fits me into something I was not even considering. Technology has improved over your R7 but not by much and a new shaft may be a nice new upgrade. I just tested the new Ping i 15 with the Proforce AXIVCore Tour Red 69 shaft and compared to my 09 burner with aftermarket UST V2 my spin rates came down about 400 rpms and I gained about 10 yards on the launch monitor. Of course now I'm shopping for the i 15:)

Getting on a launch monitor is definitely a good idea. I strongly disagree with the 400 rpm having anything to do with a 10 yard gain tho'. Because if that were true then I should have picked up (let me do the math here... 4 naught naught naught minus twenty eight naught naught equals twelve naught naught then divide by 4 naught naught equals three times 10 yards per 400 rpm spin equals 30 yards I should have picked up by changing shafts alone?
No. If you want to gain distance the first thing to do is match your equipment to a faster swing.
Golf is a game of physics. In physics everything matters, to a degree. In this case 400 rpm didn't matter THAT much.

Not to insult you sir, I just know this to be true.

now if the launch agle would have went up along with the spin rate decreasing add in probably 1.5-2 mph extra clubhead speed and there you have your 10 yards

I never said that the reduction in spin rate was giving me all the 10 yards. I just said the spin rate came down and I gained 10 yards. There is a lot more going on in the shaft and new head that is giving me the extra yards. The swing speeds were actually averaging 1 mph lower with the ping. Go figure. No insult taken:)

Most of the graphite wood shafts in US is 65+ grams.

Have you try to fit with sub 60g ? It might give you faster swing andmore distance.

Clubs make for Asian are typically lighter , the wood shafts are ranging from 40g to 50 g.

Another option for you could be to buy the driver you want on e-bay (depending on make and model, I have seen some NEW for about half the retail value). Then, take your brand-new driver to your local golf fitter and have whatever stock shaft is in it replaced with the appropriate shaft. This has the pototential to save you quite a bite of money and you can satisfy all your driver needs!
