A few numbers to float by all of you.

I tracked the last 14 rounds of last year when I decided to get serious about this crazy game.

I hit 38% of fairways from the tee which seems to be a pretty horrible number. 44% of those misses were to the left. I also hit a measly 16% of GIR with a really crappy 5% of GIR on par 5's. Also, my 1.9 putts per hole isn't helping my score at all. I suppose these numbers reflect a 20 handicapper, which I am, but what to do with these numbers?? I assume that if I would hit more greens the putts per hole would be even higher. I guess I need to work on my mid irons on down to the flatstick with the majority of practice on the putting green?

What stats do you track, and how do you use these stats?

For your handicap, the putting is pretty good. For example, i'm a 3 handicap, and i average about 1.8 putter per hole. Your other two stats, not so much. Tracking stats just shows you what you need to work on, the weaknesses in your game.

Putts per hole is decent, and I've had a lot of positive comments from others on course about my putting. Although, I think it would be MUCH higher if I were to hit more GIR.

Thats sort of the trade-off. My putts per GIR stat is 1.94, and per missed GIR is 1.74. So likely it would go up a little. But compared to most 20's 1.9 is still pretty good.

If your counting putts you should only count GIR or from shots outside of 80 yards so you get a more accurate result.
Or just count a greenside chip as a putt....

DUH!! I never thought to track putting per GIR AND per missed GIR. I will have to do that this year.

At any rate, as a high capper I guess I could use practice in all facets of the game regardless of stats. LOL

WOW, doesn't that slow your round down doing all that measuring? What quick measuring device do you have? I assume you're not getting out the tape at every green.

It doesn't affect the pace of the round by even one second.

What measuring device do I use? Three of them: one brain, two eyes. Surely you can estimate whether a putt is 12 feet or 18 feet.

Sorry about that Erik. The numbers you put up were so precise (14.6' for example) I just assumed you used some sort of laser device or something.

For the record I can indeed estimate a 12' putt VS an 18' putt.

I'm gonna check out Scorecard. Thanks.

I use my scorecard for keeping my score. And for keeping up with side bets, but that's it. Knowing my statistics would just depress me.

Most people walk off their putts anyway, if you figure i stride is about 1 yard, do the math out. Or you could actually measure your stride, but that might be overkill.

On my score card I track the following:

Fairways hit
greens hit
putts per hole
up and downs

The most important for me is the putts per hole and putts per round and my up and downs. I try to keep my putts under 30 per round and my up and down to one putt over 60% - 70%. To clarify, my up and downs, is when ever I am around the green and can one putt to make birdie, save par or even to one putt and save boogie is an up and down. I mark my score card with a one and if I get up and down I circle the one.

My focus this year is getting up and downs and lowering my putts per round or my short game. You can hit a fairway and still make double boogie if your short game is not working, on the other hand, you can miss your drive and still save par and even make birdie on a par 5 if your short game is the strong part of your golf game.

Yeah, those were averages... just like 1.84 putts per green in regulation. I just estimate to within about three or five feet on the golf course.
