Hey guys, what good is an eleven wood? Thinking about possibly buying one.

An 11 wood would likely be a replacement for a 5/6 iron depending on your distance gaps. If you have trouble hitting those irons, I'd say go for it, but they're not too common these days.

I suppose those higher numbered woods are being replaced by the hybrids these days....

I have a hogan hybrid that is pretty awesome.

Aaron, but you're just starting out, too... and haven't played much.

I think the skill of properly wielding, swinging, and hitting long irons is important. Pros, yes, are replacing their 2Is and in some very rare cases 3Is with hybrids, but nobody's replacing 4Is.

I think irons are more versatile. So be careful. Just as a cavity back can "improve your game," they don't make you a better player. There's a ceiling. I think using too many hybrids and woods is a crutch or a ceiling that prevents you from becoming a better player. You may shoot better - if that's what you're after go for it - but golf skill is golf skill, and clubs that take that away from you don't help you improve it.

In deep rough, with 200 yards to go to the green, there's no way I'm reaching for any club other than a 4-iron, it's irreplaceable in my bag.

I have to say thanks for all the input, I guess I'll just have to make a special effort to hit my irons. More time on the range instead of the course would help alot.

Best tip I know of for long irons is to swing them as smoothly and easily as you do your 7I. Too many people really try to jump at a 3I. That's no way to hit it.

if i were to keep my old set i would replace my 4 iron with a lob wedge.i cant hit that thing if my life depended on it. but i can crush my 3 iron and every other iron in the bag.

there was a guy in my league that had a complete set of woods right down through the pw.actually he might still be in the league cant remember who it was off the top of my head.

If you can hit your 3I and your 5I, then I think your problem with the 4I may be mental more than anything... Just tell yourself it's a strong 5I or a weak 3I. Get out a Sharpie and write "3½" on the bottom.

    • I’d go with the Titleist if you liked the look of the blades but were suffering with distance. They should be a little more forgiving than a full blade and still retain some workability. Also remember to consider the shafts each have as this will be a big contributor to how they feel. Clemsonfan is right though… get fit or spend a bit of time on a launch monitor 🤙
    • Day 28: 2026.01.30 Managed to make time for a few swings out back today. Need a proper bit of range time this weekend.
    • Day 30, 1/30.  Six minutes this morning hitting a few more range balls, indoors, off a mat, into the net.  Did this before leaving the house.

    • Hi All my New Year’s resolution was to start playing golf again. I’ve caught the bug and am really enjoying hitting balls at a couple of my local ranges.looking forward to getting back out on courses in the spring. Based in the UK and 38 years old, I’ve been playing since I was a kid. Best handicap I’ve held is 2 in my mid 20s. Over the past 10 years I’ve played once or twice a year, sometimes with friends or for work. Could shoot 4-5 over, but just as easily shoot 15-20 over. I’ve moved to South Wales and am very lucky to be near some world class links courses, which gives me even more motivation to get playing again! I will start looking for a local coach in my area when I have more time to invest, but I recalled scouring this forum a few years ago and finding some good tips and advice so wanted to give it a try to see if there were any glaring issues I could fix in the meantime!  A few swings below… one from 1st week Jan and one from today. I have fixed my P1 takeaway to my liking and am now working on what I see as pretty severe early extension & hip thrust. Also terrible hip rotation. I’d like confirmation that this is indeed a problem and and suggestions on a few good drills. Thanks for reading 🙂 I've been Playing Golf for: 30+ years My current handicap index or average score is: 10ish over My typical ball flight is: mid The shot I hate or the "miss" I'm trying to reduce/eliminate is: push right with irons, hooks and push with driver!  Videos:
