I've noticed a lot lately, since I've changed my swing off the tee, I end up having to take a step backwards after my swing. All my weight is on my heels for some reason. I still hit the ball straight, and when I actually have to step backwards are some of my best shots. When I concentrate on keeping my weight on my toes, my slice returns.

Pretty odd, but has anyone else had this problem. Good shots with an awkward finish, or bad shots with a good finish.......

It is possible that you stand up a lot during the downswing and the follow-through. You could also possibly be standing too close to the ball, and you hit the good shots when you fall back because maybe normally you hit it on the heel, but you hit it flush when you fall back. It could also be a swing plane issue. It you normally swing too far to the inside, maybe when you fall back you come over the top a little, which compared to your normal swing would be on plane. There could be more, I'm just brainstorming.

Yeah, it sounds like you're standing too close to the ball. IMO, weight in your heels or toes is no good... you want to be centered.

Could be a number of things but usually when you concentrate on keeping your weight on your toes at address and through the swing, it has to move to your heels on the downswing as your body tries to balance itself out. Your weight should not be in your toes or your heels at address. You want to feel centered with the weight in the middle of your feet. Should help you stay balanced.

Falling back is apparently the key to driving par 4s.

like others said, it could be a number of things. but if your shots are going straight and where you want them to go it may not necessarily be a bad thing. it could be that you are off balanced, which is bad, and you can tell if you are. but it could just be the result of a powerful swing and finish. i played on saturday and i took a big swing on a wide open par four that was a little over 400 yards, it was my longest and best drive of the day. i was swinging for the fences, and it pulled me out of my shoes a bit and i fell back a little. but my drive did exactly what i intended it to.

Two things come to mind... 1) your stance could be too narrow.... 2) you are pulling away from the ball subconsciously to over correct for a bad slice swing.

Have you ever seen someone swing and kick their left foot open during their swing... that's a correction to overcompensate for a slice. You could be in the same boat.

    • A strong grip cups the wrist (lead) and then it wants to flatten through impact, something I used to be able to avoid to keep it from going left and protecting my forearm (the main premise of my set up). Longer the club, harder it is becoming. Either way, yes, I need to transition to gripping it open.
    • Why don't you grip it "open" so you can return your hand to the place where you're comfortable/not sore, but the ball won't go left? It's effectively weaker… without actually "being" weaker?

    • Idk but I would have to imagine that a putter that is aimed where you think it's aimed would be the most important aspect of a putter
