Hi,
What drills have you used to help fix an "out to in" swing path into the more desired In to Out path. Preferably something that you can do at a driving range and see visible results.
Cheers ....

I can't give any "drills" as such but I recently worked through this exact problem with my club pro. He effectively showed me on video what i was doing wrong, and then proceeded to help me "feel" the position I should be getting into on the downswing. I then practised that movement (and still am...).

I also found using "USA snow poles" laid down either side of the ball extrmely useful, as the bright colours seem to force me to bring the clubs in straight...

you might find that useful? I was starting with them "wide apart" and worked them inwards till there wasn't much leeway either side... seemed to help!

Interesting you shuld bring this up. I recently recalled the way I learned my own swing path, to swing from the inside path to the ball. It was in a buffalo grass field where I used to hit practice balls as a young kid. After a rain, the grass grew up to about 4 or 5 inches height before it got mowed. You could take a swing with a 5 iron and see a perfect partial arc of your swing path in the grass. Try it... no need to dig up the ground, just skim the grass right at ground level... you can see your swing arc and adjust your swing to make it approach form the inside back of the ball. It also helped stop me from throwing my hands through the shot because the best swatch of grass came from keeping my hands in front of the make-belief ball position before impact. You can learn a lot from swinging in taller grass. Flipping at the grass did not work well.

I had the out to in swing path resulting in a serious slice. What I did to correct it was I went to the range with just my wegde and hit a small bucket focusing on making the divot aim right. You know what I mean? When you slice or swing the divot ends up facing your front foot, well when you swing in to out it ends up facing away from you. I also did a drill where I put the ball down and then stuck a tee in the ground about an inch forward, and an inch right of the ball. I knew I was hitting the ball correctly when I nicked the tee during my swing.

There's a bunch out there but here's two that helped me get the feel.

- Practice taking the club back on plane. When the club is parallel to the ground during the backswing, it should be in line with your hands. I bet you take the club inside which often results in an over the top swing. You can use a mirror or video cam to monitor this.

- Let's assume when you address the ball the 12 o'clock is the ball and 9 o'clock is the target. Place an object (like another ball, rubber tee, etc.) 10 o'clock and 4 o'clock. Take the club back on plane and then loop the head around the inside of 4 o'clock and then outside of 10 o'clock on downswing. It may seem like your manipulating the club but the idea is to feel what it's like for the club to come from the inside. The visual reference should really help.

- Ultimately, make sure you start your downswing with your lower body and not your arms or shoulders.

Good luck

Kevin
