Hoping someone can help based on description. I've been to the range twice the past week and I've noticed that I'm consistently missing right on all my irons. It's not a slice or aim issue, just seems the ball is coming off to the right consistently. Ball flight is straight and I'm not losing much distance just 10-15ft right of target. I'm thinking that's it's because I'm not finishing my swing completely (lazy through zone?) or perhaps coming up a bit but not certain. If the club face is just open, wouldn't it slice? Any thoughts? Somewhat perplexed.

You are hitting dead pushes correct? To hit that shot your clubface is open and your swing path is square to that open club face and swinging from the inside. For me my pushes are a result of coming into the ball to far from the inside with an open club face and missing that way. One thing I do is try to not rush the transition from back swing to down swing. When I get too fast my body out races the hands and I hit big pushes. But I can't say that is what you are doing. We need video to truely understand what is going on. Pushes and hooks come from the same fault with different club face angles at impact.

X2 on what leftgolfer said. You simply need to get the clubface closed enough at impact(relative to swing path) in order to get the ball to start off straighter and draw towards the target.

I had this same problem not a couple days ago, it turns out I was moving my head just the slightest forward at impact, and that seemed to move my body so that my club face was somewhat open towards impact, and I would miss them pretty right.

Yes, a head slide towards the target can cause that. I've been there done that too. You're basically mainpulating the swing path when that happens, without realizing it obviously.

Make sure your set-up has parallel "Railroad Tracks." For a straight shot, your clubface should be square to the target line, and your feet alignment should be parallel to the target line. Lots of people get into trouble by aligning their feet with the target, and end up pushing their actual target line out to the right. If you aren't slicing, this may be what you're doing.

We also experience an optical illusion about where we're looking when we are viewing sideways, which contributes to the problem. Correct alignment: .....0......0 (feet alignment) ---------|--------->............................... Flagstick Target line

I had the exact same issue with pushes and push fades. Got it straightened out dramatically over the past few days -- For me, it was a backswing problem -- Cupping my wrist, fanning the club face wide open at the top, and not getting it back to square in time. Still adjusting a bit with the occasional hook, but it's all coming around to the same issue of how I set my wrists on the backswing.

This might very well be it..I do feel like my right wrist is a bit too active in my back swing with my irons sometimes(old habit). Someone else mentioned slowing down on the transition as well so I guess it's back to the range tomorrow to get a better feel. Thanks for the replies.

Your timming is off. either your hands are too far from your body or you are taking the club back too far away from your body on the take away and not allowing your body and arms to be in sync.

1) try checking your arms position from your body
2) practice your take away with your feet together, if you fall down your backswing arc is too wide

    • Day 442 - 2025-12-16 Got some swings in at an indoor academy a little south of Erie.
    • Has anyone played the new Maxfli forged irons? For the first time in I don't know how many years, they have come out with new clubs. From what I read, Maxfli was bought by Taylor Made a long time ago which then took all of their ball making technology and patents in order to get into that market. The club business was left to whither and the reorganized company, now a part of Dicks / Golfworks / Maltby, is producing these new clubs. (Their Tour X balls which I play are really good.) Anyway, I tried them both out at Golf Galaxy. There's a player's distance iron (XC-3) and a blade (XC-2) and both feel really, really nice, almost "Mizuno-like" in their soft buttery feel and they're a bargain at $800 for a set. I'm planning to ditch my Titleist's and want to go back to a forged iron. I almost pulled the trigger on the Mizuno Pro-245's last summer, but a damaged tendon sheath in my finger combined with a back injury messed up my golf game so I held off. Now the Pro-245's are no longer available, soon to be replaced by the MX-15. (At twice the price of the Maxfli's...that's what got my attention in the first place.) If anyone has played with the new Maxfli's or just tried them out like I did, let me know what you think.
