Do most players (especially better players/pro's) play the same swing weights in all of their clubs to keep a consistent feel or do they vary the weights between the woods, irons and wedges? Is it even important?
Just checking my clubs I have D4 for driver and 3 wood, D3 hybrid, D2 irons and D5 wedges.

Swing weight is an often overlooked piece of the puzzle to being fitted correctly. It's personal preference to a degree, but having the right or wrong swing weight on a certain club - matched with the way YOU swing it - can be the key to constant contact on the sweet spot vs misshits -- and as a result has an impact on distance and accuracy.

I like my driver at D2
4 wood at D2
hybrid at D2
irons at D2
wedges at D5

Most people keep the swingweight pretty similar from driver to 9 iron or pitching wedge. The sand wedge is nearly always heavier, and the lob wedge will be about the same. Some people prefer the PW to fit with their wedges, others with their irons.

Jay-Bird has it right. You need to determine when and where you load the shaft. Typically pro's like all their woods and irons to be the same swing weight, with the wedges heavier due to having more control on the shorter shots. I'll never forget getting my 975 D Titleist with the gasp (BiMatrix) shaft...well after the first round I fn hated it (the demo I used in the Illinois Open Qualifier was a monster, I couldn't miss a fairway and it was long)..found out it was C-9 which proved to be too lite for my style of swing. Needless to say the club ended up getting dumped...so try zeroing in on what weight feels good, and have a professional "eye" your swing.

My swingweights vary throughout the set. My woods come in at D3, 3-9 are D2, PW D3, SW D4, GW D5, LW D6. For me it's all about how the club feels in my hand. After much tinkering, these are the weights that I prefer, YMMV.

Can any correlations be made from swing problems related to weight? For example, could a change from heavier swing weight to lighter correlate to hitting fat shots? I'm trying to educate myself on swing weight and I'm finding it more difficult to find a lot of information on the topic by traditional searching. Preference must be the result of performance so what performance changes have you experienced going from heavier to lighter, vice versa?

The most info I've found specific to swings and swing weight is a slower, smoother swing would benefit from higher swing weight.

A clubmaker once said it's better to have the same swing weight for all of your clubs. The exception is for Sand Wedge. It needs a really high swing weight such as D5 to digging out the sand.

Standard swing weight for most irons are D2....

    • Day 36: back to some mirror work tonight. Need a bit more forearm roll in my feels to help with the shallowing.
    • _sigh_ so close to red text.  Went away for three days, but didn't do a practice morning-of-departure (Friday) nor evening-of-return (Sunday), so I had three misses, back to day one. Day 1, May 4 2026.  At home today, spent nearly an hour in my practice room, hitting about three dozen practice balls, primarily with my 6-iron.
    • Day 254 5-4 Arms off chest in backswing and downswing. Short swing, pause and then hit.  Hit foam balls. Keeping arching of wrist a focus as well.
    • I would think of it in terms of time. The time it takes to get the arm angle into a good position to deliver the club with proper shaft lean. Another component is rotation, but that is also a matter of timing. It relates to how the body stalls to give the golfer time to hit the ball. If you have to get 80+ degrees out of that right elbow in one third of a second versus 50 degrees in the same time then you have to steal time from somewhere. It is usually body rotation. That does not help with shaft lean.  I agree in that amateurs tend to make the swing more complicated than pro golfers.
    • I haven't been able to practice like I wanted and won't for the next week.  1. The weather sucks in Ohio this year. I have been mostly inside hitting foam balls. Just kind of my basic stuff.  2. I woke up last Saturday with a left side rib muscle on fire. If I turned or leaned a certain way it would spasm that almost buckled my knees. I have been taking a break to let that settle. I don't want to get a long term injury. I think I pinched a nerve or just aggravated a muscles.   3. I am going on a mini-vacation to Florida (screw you Ohio weather) with a friend, and rolling that into a work conference I have next week. I will be with out my clubs for a week.  I will be back next in two Fridays to hit the ground running with some warmer temps and better weather in Ohio, hopefully. I would really like to get more out on the course and the range.
