For all clubmakers out there...

When you use a Spine Finder, the shaft will roll to a position. Then you mark the top of the shaft. What do you call the top part of the shaft? Is it the spine?

there is a bit of confusion out there as to what a "spine" is. the spine is defined as the plane that is least resistant to bending. when you load the shaft in a spine finder, it will rotate the the position that it is most comfortable bending in. this plane is called the NBP or natural bending plane. The spine is the plane that when loaded, the shaft won't return to the NBP. It will be 90 degrees from your NBP. at least that is how i've always understood it. if anyone else wants to correct me, feel free

OK... So you put your shaft in a spine finder and you roll it and it will find its position, (12:00) and you mark your shat.
Now you install it in your club. With 12:00 being parallel with the club face, witch position does the line on the shaft point.
12:00, 9:00 or 3:00

Normally, it (is suggested that the neutral bend point) would be installed at the 9:00 or 3:00. The real point to doing this is to make sure the shafts are all installed in the same orientation to ensure consistency across the entire set. I have been doing a lot of research into this myself, as I am planning on making my own set of Maltby's in the very near future.

    • Shot a 37 with two birdies. 2 highlights which came on the same hole.  Had a 297 yard drive which set me up for a nice approach on my  nemesis hole which I walked off with a birdie. Previous best for ages was a bogey on that hole.  2 more added to the birdie challenge.
    • I can just see Norman rushing in to LIV admin building with his silly shark hat gleaming to the Saudis, ‘ Gentleman! Have I got a great idea! Let’s have our OWN golf courses…like American football and NBA Does! It’ll really grow the game!’ He rushes out as the Saudis give him their encouragement. As the door closes and before the smell of Greg’s Brut cologne has even dissipated, they all laugh hysterically.

    • You've heard me say that one of my feels is that the ball will go 45° right… and it doesn't. At all. Just make sure you remember HOW crazy that feel is, because… it may feel that extreme for a long time.
