I took a look at my swing on video to see how the drills and range work I've done have affected it. Without posting it here, one thing I noticed is that my shoulders are almost perfectly square at impact. I thought this was a good thing at first, but I noticed some data that showed tour players are open, on average 26* at impact. When my shoulders are open at impact, all I get is shots off the toe, since it has pulled my left shoulder, and consequently the clubhead away from the ball. What's the magical mojo for having open shoulders at impact? Do you have to stretch your left arm towards the ball more? Is it necessarily bad to have square shoulders at impact? I'm hitting the ball solid, but getting tired of the push fades.

Where is this data? I would believe 26* for the hips, but there is almost no way the shoulders are that open. Square at impact is a good guideline. Here's Steve Stricker's swing:

I heard reference on another forum of a Sport Tech study of tour players that showed that, on average, shoulders were open 26° at impact, with the hips slightly more open than that (Between 30 and 45, I think). A google search of "tour shoulders open at impact" also shows quite a split, some for and some against open shoulders. Also, Hogan had his shoulders quite open at impact, just FYI. One thing I haven't seen is any reference to a correlation between lag and open shoulders at impact, or whether there even is one for that matter. My gut tells me that the additional turning and squating is required to give a Hogan-esque quantity of lag time to release. But I think I've seen reference to Sergio Garcia being square to slightly closed at impact. Not sure if that is correct, but it would definitely be a counterpoint to the previous speculation.
