I was wondering how big of a difference gripsize makes. I never really thought i was using the wrong sized grips, but then i read somewhere that the ideal gripsize has your fingers on your left hand (for a righty) barely touching the pad of flesh below the thumb. Mine definitely tuck under. I wouldn't consider my hands to be big, so I was wondering if I really should switch to midsize. Also, how big of an adjustment would it be to make the change, particularly for chipping?

Also, what would you guys recommend for moisture control, as I have really sweaty palms.

Thanks,

Gibby

Until I was fitted for irons, I just used standard size grips. When I was fitted, they did a couple of measurements of my hand that I didn't pay too much attention to, but resulted in getting a grip size of +1/32" -- halfway between standard and midsize. I don't think I'd say I had to make an adjustment, but with the right size grips, gripping the club correctly became natural. With standard size grips, I'd usually have to give it a quick thought to make sure everything was lined up correctly. Having one less thing to think about in my golf swing definitely helps.

There are a lot of charts that approximate grip size based on glove-size, but they all seem to be slightly different, so I'm not sure how reliable they are. I wear an ML glove, which the charts say is a standard grip, but alas I need a couple of wraps. YMMV

Gibby,

I am noticing a considerable difference in grip size, when I went to Midsize with 6 wraps. I will be making the move to Jumbo with 3 or 4 wraps. I have large hands, and standard grips were way to small, causing me to grip too tightly, and cause some cramping after 18 holes. I think moving to the properly sized grip didn't require an adustment at all. As Toaster said, it's more natural with the correct size grip. I use 4-5 gloves per round in rotation in the summer, as I sweat badly. Change them before the soak through. I will be trying a full cord grip this year, to aide in moisture control as well.

I just had a few of my clubs re-gripped. I went from standard size to Golf Pride Tour Velvet Jumbo. Wow, what a difference. I will always get my clubs gripped to the appropriate size. My hands are large and my fingers used to curl underneath the palm of my hand, but now they just barely slip under. It's much more comfortable. My swing felt a bit different after the re-gripping, but it wasn't a problem. Perhaps playing within a close margin of your ideal size is good enough for most people, but if your ideal grip size isn't close to what you're currently playing, as someone who just 3 days ago made the change, I can say that it can be worth it to change sizes. At $4-5/club, it isn't that bad of a deal.

    • Terry - what a story…I’m about 12 yrs your junior but I do have friends in similar places of life. Like others have said - “go for it”.  The fact that you’re willing to challenge yourself in the midst of dealing with something like Parkinson’s is hero level stuff….looking forward to seeing how this great adventure plays out and make sure to get some of it on video as well.  Make them memories dude!
    • Played nine today. Just went out trying to make a swing that had the feels of what I am working on. I would give it a C- at best. The best swing came on the 9th hole, 220 yard par 3, downwind. I finally made a swing where I felt the pause, and the arms down stuff like I practice. I hit the 4 iron about 215 yards, it rolled just off the back of the green about 20-Ft from the pin.  I might play 10 yards shorter on every iron shot, and make that pause swing, cause I can still hit it about 90-95% the distance.  Distance wedges or 3/4 wedges are going to different. Shanked two of them today trying the pause, arms down stuff. Might spend a bit of time looking at the video on those shots specifically.
    • Day 350: good practice session today. Hit about 25 balls, working slowly on my priority piece. It looks decent in slow motion. Better at full speed but not quite there. Then putted for about an hour. Focused on putts inside 10’ but also did a stack putting session.
    • Two of my golfing Buddie's are left handed. I will play a couple of rounds and use their clubs and see how I do.  Played last Thursday and had the worst game ever. (Playing in really strong winds. (SW @ 20 to 30 mph with > gusts.)  Will let everyone know when I get back out. May not play until Monday.   Thanks everyone, for your encouragement.    Terry
