Hey everyone, I just called my local pro shop. They do club fittings for free right now, and I can't hit my irons farther than I can throw them. However, I hit my driver and hybrids very well.

So, is there a possibility that my problems with my irons are strongly tied to poorly fitted irons? (when i miss hit, it is too fat and the ball goes about half as far) Also, with black irons, I can see that I hit a decent number of balls off the toe.

I bought my current set before I was very informed about golf, and would not mind buying another set if it could help my cause. I would like to get more serious about my game and look forward to playing a lot over the summer. Any thoughts or ideas are welcome. I would also like to know what irons a mid-high handicapper should be trying? But I want ones that I can grow into. Hope this makes sense, thanks for any help.

Poorly fitted irons won't cause you to hit it fat, unless they are really grotesquely mis-fitted. But they can bias it towards the toe or heel.

Good to know. I am still very much in the learning phase. I try to watch as much golf as I can (gotta love the golf channel), and I read a lot of the threads on here. As far as understanding how clubs or a certain swing affects this or that...I am not there yet.

What irons do you all think I should try when I go? I searched but many of the threads are older and I'm not sure how that would affect suggestions. Thanks again everyone.

28 handicap, i would go with any game improvement irons.

If you hit hybrids well, then ditch the 3,4,5 irons and go all hybrids. Then get a set of PW through 6 iron. I know alot of poeple that do this. But, i would go to a pro shop and talk to golf professional, he can take a look at your swing and give your recomendations. But when it comes to golf clubs, its all personal preference. I would get something that looks good over the ball, thats my major concern. If i don't feel confident in it, i wont hit it. Thats why i hate those ugly box looking drivers, i can't stand them.

When it comes to fiting, the basics are as follows.

Lie, this is easy to check, a few swings on a lie board and you don't have to worry about it.
Loft, make sure there is 3-4 degrees between each club, less for lower lofted clubs
Length, personal preference

Shafts, you can go graphite or steel. I am a steel guy for my irons, i like the feedback. But for someone with a slower speed, graphite can help out.

    • A strong grip cups the wrist (lead) and then it wants to flatten through impact, something I used to be able to avoid to keep it from going left and protecting my forearm (the main premise of my set up). Longer the club, harder it is becoming. Either way, yes, I need to transition to gripping it open.
    • Why don't you grip it "open" so you can return your hand to the place where you're comfortable/not sore, but the ball won't go left? It's effectively weaker… without actually "being" weaker?

    • Idk but I would have to imagine that a putter that is aimed where you think it's aimed would be the most important aspect of a putter
