Hey,

I currently have no 3i or 4i and am looking to put a hybrid in that space. I currently have a set of Diablo Edge irons (5-PW). My question is, should I definitely get the, say, 3H from the same brand or can I mix in a different brand?

For example, if I were going to go for a 3H, should I definitely get the Diablo Edge Hybrid (21* loft) and keep the set consistent or is something like the TaylorMade Rescue 09 (19* loft) a possibility? The swing weights are D0 and D3 respectively.

I have the Diablo Edge 5W (19*) and am looking for a higher trajectory club.

Any thoughts? I can't really go and hit them as I don't live in an area with sufficient retailers.
Driver - R9 460 9.5*
Woods - Diablo Edge 3 and 5
Irons - Diablo Edge 5-AW
Wedge - Spin Milled 56.14, 60.04
Putter - White Hot XG 330Ball - E52010 GoalsBreak 100, Break 90, Beat My Dad

The brands don't matter at all. Hybrids are like woods, they don't need to by consistent. I know a few guys that even have mismatched hybids since they hit one brand better for certain shots. The biggest thing is to make sure that all the lofts are comparable so you don't end up with a big gap between clubs.

I will judge my rounds much more by the quality of my best shots than the acceptability of my worse ones.

I don't think it really makes much of a difference if you mix brands.

Although I do prefer to keep them the same.

In my situation I have...
-Warrior Driver and 3 Wood
-Nike Hybrid
-Acuity Irons
-Warrior Wedges

Career Bests:

18 Holes--80 @ Carroll Meadows Golf Course(+9)

Home Course:

2) Mayfair Country Club

Callaway driver, cleveland woods/hybrids, taylormade irons, cleveland wedges...mix and match whatever hits best for you...

In my Titleist 2014 9.5" Staff bag:

I also only have up to a 5iron. I use a 20° Adams and a 23° Nickent hybrids. One has a graphite shaft and the other is a steel shaft. I hit them the distances that I need to so they are in the bag for that reason.

+1

Play with what you're confident or comfortable with after demoing them. My irons are mizuno but my hybrids are macgregors and they work fine for me.

+2 here.....

This is good advice...as you can see from my sig, I also have a mix and match bag.....when I started playing this was an issue for me...I wanted everything to match, but as I learned a little, I realized that golf clubs are about what you can hit comfortably and cnsistently, rather than brands or looks. With that said, just ensure that you get the proper loft to bridge the gap in your set. 23* may make sence. Your 5i is 25* and your 5w is 19*, that would leave you with either a 21* 3h or a 14* 4h in the diablo family. Also they seem to have shallow faces, which may work for you, but I couldn't hit them well. That's why I went with the Cobra Bafflers. My 3h gives me the confidence I need to get out of rough situations in the 160-180 situations, and 180 - 200 on the fairway, either way, the deep face of these allows me to tackle either situation comfortably and cofidently. I like enough to consider removing my 4i Titleist AP1, and replace it with a Cobra Baffler 4h. I hope this helps.
It's the indian, not the arrow! But it sure is nice to have good arrows!!!!!

Another tip would be to go to the courses around you and see if they sell clubs. If they do, then ask to demo theirs and then you can custom order from them. The only way to do it is to test out a lot of different types. If this takes traveling to some place that has a lot of different options then do it, see it as a road trip, and play golf there... use it as an excuse. I would recommend telling the wife (if applicable) she has a $300 shopping spree and send her on her way... This will buy time and afford you the cost of about 2 hybrids, or 1 and some other fun things at a golf store... While going to a big box retailer would be fun, the course option may be better as they may have one you can hit on their range, instead of just in their store's hitting bay... anyway TEST them out!

most definitely do NOT match any clubs to your set just to match brands ... go to GG and hit every different hybrid in the store and see what you feel most comfortable with and what you hit the best ... get down to 2 or 3 that you like ... come back another day or two and hit them again(you may hit differently another day).

i went back to GG over several weeks to pick out my driver, woods and hybrids ... to be honest, i did "want" to stick with all the same name brand woods/hybrids but i was more interested in better ability to hit the ball. it just so happens that it worked out where my driver, woods and hybrids were all the same name.

pick what you hit best ... don't worry about the name. no one cares what you have in your bag ... it's not a fashion show ... so use something you're best with and lower that score.

another note .. if you want to stick with the same brand ... you're able to change shafts to make a club hit differently .. this of course, costs more to do something like this.

if you're interested in going a route like that, head over to golftec and have them do a shaft optimization .. they'll tell you what shafts you should be using. this costs around 130 depending in the area you're in

    • That's good to hear. Take care of yourself. Golf is more fun when it's pain free. 👍👍
    • It's not about what individuals think is fair — it's about following the established rules of handicapping.
    • Day 210 - 2025-04-28 Hotel room swings. Used the mirror, though. That's good. Still just the same two things as always.
    • Yep, I almost flagged an 8 iron just exaggerating my right elbow backswing stuff 🤣 I am sure I might get some stalling. Maybe the sequence is a bit out of sync. I also tend to flip more when I overswing. Doing really good. It’s rejuvenated me a bit. I’m going to start weight lifting soon.
    • However 2.1b says re GP scores 2.1b ii) General Play. When an organized competition is not being contested, a score is not generally acceptable for handicap purposes if the player: * Breaches the Rules of Golf, and the correct penalty is not applied under the Rules of Golf, or * Deliberately ignores a Rule of Golf. Where a player follows the provisions set down in a Model Local Rule, even when the Committee in charge of the course has not adopted that Model Local Rule, the score may still be acceptable for handicap purposes.
