Here is what i have shot the last week or so:

42 and 48
41 and 48
40, 46, 44
47 and 37

and it isnt related to which 9 i played, there are 36 holes on the course and i jump around, but mostly play the harder two 9s that we will play more often in our league. and i have been getting too many double and triple bogeys... but after my last 9 i feel like i am almost ready to go.

Yeah that has been my problem too. For me it is the opening holes killing me. I think it is a tempo issue.

I was having that issue early on last year... and then I thought I had it figured out, but then I shot a 40 on the front nine of a tournament round, and followed it up with a 54 on the back nine.

I've been trying to shoot about 47 for nine holes and have them both be about that score... but it seems if I shoot a 47 or better on one of the sides... I shoot a 50 or worse on the other side. Last weekend I played my first round of 2010 and I shot 49 on my first nine and 50 on my second nine (shotgun start on hole #9). The scorecard read 51-48 = 99.

Good luck getting it figured out!

Tell me about it, I have been playing sooo well this year it's crazy but I just cannot put two together, I can shoot 44-38, 43-40 and 44-48.

Today I went out with my daughter (12 yrs old) and just did nine holes, I could not miss a shot I birdied the first (par 5) then had 6 pars and 2 bogey's THAT'S 37, it felt like the round of my life, my daughter was getting excited as she was playing well also, as we came off the 9th green the starter was waiting to tell us that they were waiting for our cart, I did ask if we could carry on to the back nine as we are full members etc but he would not let us, so we will never know if that would be the day I broke 80, not bad for a 16 'capper, my handicap has to start coming down soon, I keep posting my scores lol.

Man... good shootin'! That's how I felt last year when I shot the 40 on the front. I was hitting everything where I wanted, and made 5 bogeys... 1 birdie and 3 pars. When I play, I typically look at playing +6 for nine holes as a good goal for me. So for me to be only +4 after nine was an awesome feeling. I parred the 10th hole, too... then it was downhill with some OB drives and 27 of my 54 strokes on the back coming on THREE holes.

Kinda sucks you didn't get to finish out the round. Would have been great if you'd have achieved the sub-80 level! But... playing like that and posting the scores you listed above... you aren't far off. Good luck! CY

I feel your pain. my last couple rounds look like this: 16 over on the front, 1 over on the back, 4 over on the front, 15 over on the back, and 3 over on the front and 12 over on the back. Cant seem to put it all together in a single round....

I am having the same problems but my front is always good and my back nine is where the wheel fall off. I was even up to 11th hole and then ended up finishing with 9 over for the last 7 holes. I lose my focus or get tired.

Some of my issues are simple mistakes that I make and know that I can play better on the back nine.
some secrets to consistent play is a consistent pre-shot routine.

keep your scores with

putts
up and downs
greens hit
fairways hit

what area need work?

oh, its just early and im still getting everything put together. the driver starts to go right (even tho i used to hook it), i start to loose concentration on getting up and down and i start to miss putts. its just a lil frustrating but i think im getting close to where i want to be and i think my rounds are gonna start coming together here pretty soon.

I read through this thread a few days ago, and even though I know I'd had rounds where my 9-hole scores were mismatched I couldn't really put my finger on why it happened. Yesterday, I shot 35-43 for a 78, and to tell you the truth even while I was playing I couldn't figure out what I had done to make it so different. To tell you the truth, the only difference between the two 9's were a few putts that didn't drop and a few bad lies. That's it. Nothing more. I played the same, hit the ball just as well, chose my shots the same way. The only thing I could take from it was that sometimes sh*t just happens.

Thank God I'm not alone with my schizophrenic 9's. I haven't really figured out what causes it either - sometimes I have a great score on the front and score so-so on the back and sometimes its the other way around, but I never really feel a significant change in attitude/ballstriking during the round.

Call it golf karma or something - I just chalk it up to the fact that the golf powers-that-be have secretly decided that I should never be a single digit handicap.

That said, one thing that has really helped me to keep my scores a bit more consistent is to avoid the dreaded blow up hole (or holes, depending on your perspective). Learn to miss well and you'll find your scores gravitating more towards normal on a much more frequent basis (and improve your chances of going really low!).
