I am currently living in the city of Boston and was just wondering if someone could point me in the direction of a good driving range and or cheap public golf course. I am trying to get my friend into the game and some place close to the city would be ideal. Living in Beacon Hill if it helps... thanks

The best cheap public course in Boston IMO is George Wright golf course in Hyde Park. A Donald Ross design, always in great shape, and inexpensive. I've also heard that Franklin Park golf course in Dorcester is a very good public course. The best range that I have been to is McGolf in Dedham, which is a very nice place.

Sorry that they are all in the south though, that's really the only place in Boston I go.

Hey Jamo, I played a course in a city park every day for a week one summer back in 85'. As I remember it, it was barely recognizable as a golf course they must have really spent some money on it. That was Franklin Park, So it is a real course now? I'll be up there in a month or two for about four days. My inlaws family is the pitts so I'll be out there instead of at reunion events. Hope it is worth it.

It ain't bragging if you can do it.

I've never played there before but I have heard some good things about it. They hosted a junior New England PGA tournament a couple of years ago, so I assume it's pretty good. The last time I played Hyde Park they guy I was with told me I would like Franklin Park because they were similar, and he also really seemed to like the place.

For reference, here is their website: http://www.sterlinggolf.com/franklin/index2.htm They are owned by the same people who own Newton Commonwealth and Sassamon Trace in Natick.

There is Fresh pond course in Cambridge and Pine meadow in Lenxington. Both of them are 9 hole. I found that Fresh pond can be a little more crowded on weekends.

Lexington has a decent driving range called Stone meadow.

"During our weekly Lamaze class, the instructor emphasized the importance of exercise, hinting strongly that husbands need to get out and start walking with their wives. From the back of the room one expectant father inquired, "Would it be okay if she carries a bag of golf clubs while she walks?"
