For the longest time i played a set up consisting of a 23 degree 4 hybrid and a 4 iron and i sorta liked it. First day out on the course this spring my 4 iron broke. I have been playing some practice rounds without it and seem to be doing just fine. I just had to accomodate to punching out from trees with 5 iron instead. However, i am going to purchase new irons i believe and i was wondering if you see the need for me to purchase a 4 iron. So my iron set would either be 4-p or 5 -p. Thanks.

I read in a golf magazine that if you're using anything less than a 5 iron, you'd better be at least a 5.0 handicap.

I'm well above a 5.0 handicap but I prefer to carry a 4 iron myself because I have much more confidence in hitting my irons. Plus, it's much easier to hit out of the rough than a hybrid because it doesn't get caught up and open up as easily.

Some people think hybrids are the way to go, others side with irons. IMO, it just depends on what you feel comfortable with.

Agree with DaSportsGuy... I use (and love) my 3-iron, no hybrids, no 5-wood, no problems with distance gapping.... Definitley depends on your game, and whether you find you need it or not.

You guys, I think he is saying not having a 4 iron at all, hybrid or otherwise. If it workd for you, I don't see why not, it is all about maintaining consistent yardage gaps, and if a Pw-5 set does that, go for it.

Jim Furyk has neither a 4-iron nor a 4-hybrid. He's done OK for himself. Punching out is slightly more difficult with a 5 than a 4, but that's about it. The only problem is if this introduces a distance gap that affects your game, but if you're fine without it in practice rounds, you might be for competitive rounds too. Given that you've got a 23° hybrid in the bag, I doubt it will be a problem.

I took out my 4-iron not too long ago, after a long time of carrying it and a hybrid. I haven't added a 14th club. I might put it back for a few tournaments later this month, but if I had to go out and purchase it, I wouldn't do so.

    • Day 36: back to some mirror work tonight. Need a bit more forearm roll in my feels to help with the shallowing.
    • _sigh_ so close to red text.  Went away for three days, but didn't do a practice morning-of-departure (Friday) nor evening-of-return (Sunday), so I had three misses, back to day one. Day 1, May 4 2026.  At home today, spent nearly an hour in my practice room, hitting about three dozen practice balls, primarily with my 6-iron.
    • Day 254 5-4 Arms off chest in backswing and downswing. Short swing, pause and then hit.  Hit foam balls. Keeping arching of wrist a focus as well.
    • I would think of it in terms of time. The time it takes to get the arm angle into a good position to deliver the club with proper shaft lean. Another component is rotation, but that is also a matter of timing. It relates to how the body stalls to give the golfer time to hit the ball. If you have to get 80+ degrees out of that right elbow in one third of a second versus 50 degrees in the same time then you have to steal time from somewhere. It is usually body rotation. That does not help with shaft lean.  I agree in that amateurs tend to make the swing more complicated than pro golfers.
    • I haven't been able to practice like I wanted and won't for the next week.  1. The weather sucks in Ohio this year. I have been mostly inside hitting foam balls. Just kind of my basic stuff.  2. I woke up last Saturday with a left side rib muscle on fire. If I turned or leaned a certain way it would spasm that almost buckled my knees. I have been taking a break to let that settle. I don't want to get a long term injury. I think I pinched a nerve or just aggravated a muscles.   3. I am going on a mini-vacation to Florida (screw you Ohio weather) with a friend, and rolling that into a work conference I have next week. I will be with out my clubs for a week.  I will be back next in two Fridays to hit the ground running with some warmer temps and better weather in Ohio, hopefully. I would really like to get more out on the course and the range.
