Hi guys can anyone tell me the difference in the different inserts of odyssey putters!
I think they have the:

white hot xg
black series
white ice

im thinking of changing to a white ice number 9 putter in the hope it has a firmer face!
can anyone please help?

I found that none of the odyssey putters have a "firm" face. I switched to a scotty and am never going to look back, but that's my preference. I would suggest rolling some putts with one, since I think it would be hard to judge firmness unless you could hit all three putters at once.

Most of the white hot and white hot XG putters have the soft urethane face inserts. Odyssey also makes the white steel putters, which have a stainless steel insert and provide more solid feedback. Some like the soft feel, others don't. I am currently playing a Scott Cameron putter, but I picked up the SRT white steel 2 ball putter... tired of missing 5 foot clutch puts. (i know... i know... it's the indian) But honestly, the alignment visual helps me quite a bit.

Try rolling some milled face putters. If you want a firm face you most liely will not find it in an insert putter.

You're playing an all-steel Scotty and you want to switch to an Odyssey urethane insert for a firmer feel? Not gonna happen. Steel is harder than plastic, end of story.

There's no doubt my White Ice Rossie feels firmer off the face than my SC Pro Platinum Newport 2. I haven't tried the Black Series but I found the White Hot Odysseys to be very firm with little feel, the White Hot XG series to be too soft for me and the White Ice to be just about perfect firmness (Cue the Goldilocks jokes). I'm not sure how Odyssey grade them but for me it would be (Softer to Firmer) - White Hot XG, White Ice, White Hot (original). I think the White Ice is good combination of firmness and feel.

The new Black series tour design doesn't have a insert but a thin urethane layer between the carbon head and the tungsten flange.I also believe that the first Black series went without an insert while the black series i has one which I have and its not firm at all, really soft.

I found odyssey's to have a really soft feel off the face.

Try a milled face, like a rife or a YES! putter.

The white ice series came out with the new grooves in mind. This is what i mean.
The golf world killed 2 birds with one stone with the groove rule. They hoped that with decreased spin from wedges, people would change to a softer ball to compensate for the lost backspin. The white ice series was brought out in reaction to this anticipated ball change - change to softer ball = harder insert needed to keep the feel the same.

The XG is the softest of the group.

The black series i, white ice and white hot tour are very similar and are each firmer than the XG.

    • I generally like par-3 courses and find it a darn shame that the last of them closed in my area during the pandemic. Part of it may have to do with the fact that I never have been very good with the longer clubs, so the short holes are a bit more my speed.  Being able to get in 18 holes in two hours was pretty convenient and, ironically, the lack of crowds made them peaceful places to be. Naturally, that's the same reason they no longer exist around here.  The second option sounds like a whole lot of no fun.
