i sometimes color every dimple of my ball with a sharpie. I do this mostly out of boredom, but no one ever confuses it for their ball.

Some old bastid played my yellow ball with Spongebob Squarepants on it after hitting into my fairway. I found his yellow ball pretty quickly. He was up on his green staring at the happy retarded cartoon character my ball he just pulled out of the cup when he (and the rest of his group) heard me, loud and clear, call him a "DUMBSH*T!" Since he waved and yelled "sorry" I treated it as a move by an outside agency and took no penalty.

I am sorta a golf ball snob. LOL I almost never pick up a ball that I find. If I do and there is no way it is another players (hole with no side by side fairways etc) then they usually get donated to the driving range the next time I hit balls. You know those days when you hit your last shot of a bucket and hit it bad. (I hate leaving on a bad note) That is when the found ball gets donated. LOL

Anyway to pick up a ball in the middle of a fairway is just wrong! That is truly theft.

Lol.. I too do the "donate a ball to the driving range!" I hate leaving on a bad shot.

I also never pick up a ball unless I'm 1000% its not in play (like super twlight, no one on the course).

Last week I was playing as a single and the guy i got paired up with had 5 prov ones stolen. one hole has a double green so the ball got taken before we could get up to it. the other one was a dogleg around a corner where the other green is right of the far side of the dogleg and he hit slighty into rough where guy comes over green and grabs ball then the other three were taken off the fairway. that was the first and last time i will ever play that course. I only had one stolen but i play nike pd's so it wasnt as bad for me to get one taken

I was at my local course the other day hitting balls to the 11th green from about 110 yards. It was late in the afternoon and I was one of the last people on the course. I hit all 5 in my bag and wasn't happy with the last one, so I went to the bushes to look for a lost ball, found one, came back to the fairway and saw a woman picking my balls up off the green! My bag was sitting right in the middle of the fairway 110 yards out! I yelled up to her to tell her they were mine so she calmly walked off the green with 2 in her pocket!

Yeah this course is really starting to get overcrowded with people who have no clue about etiquette. Last year on this same course we were following a group who wouldnt replace the pin. Every hole we would have to walk up to the hole, replace the pin and then walk back to our ball to hit it. Finally after 5 holes we called the clubhouse. The kid behind the counter told us just to aim at the middle of the green since we probably wouldnt be holing any shots out anyway. So why do we keep coming back...simple, $13 to walk EVERYDAY and all you can play!!! LOL. Also, for the price it really is a good course.

Mind if I ask where that $13 deal is?

What course do you generally play and what area do you live. I work for the government and I always hear stuff about golf course deals since I work with people from all over.

I normally play Mt. Pleasant, Furnace Bay, or Rocky Point but when money is a little tight I go to the military bases and I live in White Marsh. Since you work for the government Im sure you can get on the bases as well. There are some GREAT deals on the military bases!

Nice! I guess I would consider Rocky Point my "home course" as I play there more than anywhere. I haven't played Furnace Bay in a few years since I moved out of Harford County but someone told me it's been in pretty good shape recently?

Love Mt. Pleasant! I need to get out there soon... maybe run into you at one of them one day!

I typically only pick up balls that I see in the edge of the woods or plugged in thick grass. Just the other day I misjudged an approach and put it a yard or so in the woods behind the hole (which are right behind the green) Anyway, I decided to go ahead and get my ball out since I had a good idea of where it was. Ended up finding about 6 balls up there, most of them brand new.

I really love playing Rocky Point on the weekdays but on the weekends its a 6 hour round of golf. Mt. Pleasant is on of my favorites but I'm a little partial to the place since its the first place I broke 90 a couple years ago. Just look for the guy with the singing Duke headcover and thats me. I see we play pretty much the same equipment. I play all Taylormade Burner woods and hybrids, everything else is Titleist.

    • Yea, if I were to make a post arguing against the heat map concept, citing some recent robot testing would be my first point. The heat map concept is what I find interesting, more on that below. The robot testing I have looked at, including the one you linked, do discreet point testing then provide that discrete data in various forms. Which as you said is old as the hills, if you know of any other heat map concept type testing, I would be interested in links to that though! No, and I did say in my first post "if this heat map data is valid and reliable" meaning I have my reservations as well. Heck beyond reservations. I have some fairly strong suspicions there are flaws. But all I have are hunches and guesses, if anyone has data to share, I would be interested to see it.  My background is I quit golfing about 9 years ago and have been toying with the idea of returning. So far that has been limited to a dozen range sessions in late Summer through Fall when the range closed. Then primarily hitting foam balls indoors using a swing speed monitor as feedback. Between the range closing and the snow flying I did buy an R10 and hit a few balls into a backyard net. The heat map concept is a graphical representation of efficiency (smash factor) loss mapped onto the face of the club. As I understand it to make the representation agnostic to swing speed or other golfer specific swing characteristics. It is more a graphical tool not a data tool. The areas are labeled numerically in discrete 1% increments while the raw data is changing at ~0.0017%/mm and these changes are represented as subtle changes in color across those discrete areas. The only data we care about in terms of the heat map is the 1.3 to 1.24 SF loss and where was the strike location on the face - 16mm heal and 5mm low. From the video the SF loss is 4.6% looking up 16mm heal and 5mm low on the heat map it is on the edge of where the map changes from 3% loss to 4%. For that data point in the video, 16mm heal, 5mm low, 71.3 mph swing speed (reference was 71.4 mph), the distance loss was 7.2% or 9 yards, 125 reference distance down to 116. However, distance loss is not part of a heat map discussion. Distance loss will be specific to the golfers swing characteristics not the club. What I was trying to convey was that I do not have enough information to determine good or bad. Are the two systems referencing strike location the same? How accurate are the two systems in measuring even if they are referencing from the same location? What variation might have been introduced by the club delivery on the shot I picked vs the reference set of shots? However, based on the data I do have and making some assumptions and guesses the results seem ok, within reason, a good place to start from and possibly refine. I do not see what is wrong with 70mph 7 iron, although that is one of my other areas of questioning. The title of the video has slow swing speed in all caps, and it seems like the videos I watch define 7i slow, medium, and fast as 70, 80, and 90. The whole question of mid iron swing speed and the implications for a players game and equipment choices is of interest to me as (according to my swing speed meter) over my ~decade break I lost 30mph swing speed on mine.
    • Maxfli, Maltby, Golfworks, all under the Dicks/Golf Galaxy umbrella... it's all a bit confounding. Looking at the pictures, they all look very, very similar in their design. I suspect they're the same club, manufactured in the same factory in China, just with different badging.  The whacky pricing structure has soured me, so I'll just cool my heels a bit. The new Mizuno's will be available to test very soon. I'm in no rush.
    • Day 23 - 2026-01-12 Finally outdoors again with 10 minutes of 7 iron work in the net. Also mirror work. Excited to get back on the range tomorrow and maybe do some film.
    • Day 10: 2026.01.12 Hit 25 balls at the range, working on rotating right hip during backswing.
