I was looking around at some different medium priced golf balls, because I was running low on Pro V1x's. I was looking for something that wasn't really expensive, for just practice rounds and such. One of the balls I saw that I thought might be good are the BlackMax's from Maxfli.

Any others?

I've been using the BlackMAX for quite a while now and I've been pretty happy with them. I don't use Pro V's so I wouldn't be able to tell you how they compare.

Awards, Achievements, and Accolades

My son loves the Black Max's. He prefers them over the ProV1s. Edwin Watts has them for $19.99 right now on sale. I like the Callaway HX Hot myself. I seem to get a little more distance out of them.

Black Max are a good deal right now, as they are being discontinued with the introduction of the TaylorMade brand balls. If you want a really good deal, try the MC Lady Precept. They are 9.99 a doz! Its a good ball that started the whole soft core ball movement. They are especially good for slower swing speeds that can't really take advantage of the Pro v1.

The Nike PD series seems like a good ball. Been tring them in practice rounds and some league rounds and they have me thinking of changing from my regular pro v1x's. only played the red and green PD's will try the blue soon.

The Pro talks about the lower compression balls being good for men also and I was wondering how they do as far as back spin is concerned on the greens?

Might be a good ball for him to consider!

The ball that combines the "best of both worlds" in this respect is probably the NXT Tour. It's relatively low compression (around 70-75, I believe), and it's pretty well behaved around the greens. You won't back it up ten feet like you can with the Pro V1, but that can be a hindrance anyway...

When not in tournaments and such, I like the NXT's or NXT tour's... The Calaways are fine, I've never had a problem with the inexpensive warbirds..The maxfli's are ok too, haven't played them much, but when I have, they have held up for the round...

I love Maxfli balls myself, the ones I use are the A3 solid, I can get them on sale for $15 a dozen, much cheaper than the BlackMax...

I'm a big Noodle fan, but I play with a lot of used Titlist proV1's that I find around the course. We have a ton of seniors who just must loose a ton of ProV1's.

I love the Noodle, Noodle Ice (hey I can show my femanine side), Titleist DT SoLo, Nike Mojo and the Precept Laddie. The NXT is a great ball as well. I used the ProV1 exclusively for a while, but I just love the softer feel of these.

I played the Maxfli Blackmax's for most of the summer and like them alot. They are a hell of alot more durable than a Prov1(x) and make a nicer sound off the driver. I guess i dont really notice any kind of distance gains with playing either the Titleist, or the Maxfli. I bought a few dozed BlackMax's for just over $1 a piece a couple months ago and am happy i did.

    • Day 120 - Played 18; much better than yesterday. Miss right now is off the heel of the club, so I need to sort that out.
    • Today we played Pease Golf Course in Portsmouth, NH. Course was in great shape but my game didn't show up. I will say I pitched and chipped fairly well but almost everything else was very hit or miss. Cost myself a lot hitting an in play drive with pulling my approach shots maybe 85% of the time. Finally figured out I had been swaying most of the round. Only took me until 13 to figure it out. Used what felt like a much more centered turn and the ballstriking improved. 18 tomorrow using a 2 man scramble format. Just looking to contribute. Been a blast though.
    • Day 22: Hit balls with 7-iron using mevo+ to track dispersion. Was out for a long time after work; 86 balls but the first 50+ were 50% swings focusing on top of backswing feel and then just hitting the ball as a psychic reward. Finished with 20 balls close to full speed. Pretty happy with dispersion and also no horrendous misses. I’m chunking my priority piece out into two separate feels, first and more important is the position/balance at top of backswing which is what I was working on. Once I have that engrained I’ll move to transition part.
    • FWIW I never really had issues with the previous generation of Snells. But… I'm not sure I played them a ton, either.
    • I know Dean Snell designed the original Pro V along with a couple of other brands tour balls.  How exactly does the Snell ball have problems.  Did he change something in the design or is a manufacturing error since he cannot afford the unlimited R&D budgets of the big manufacturers to iron out flaws
