I used to have a very bad habit of pushing the ball pretty strongly. After taking lessons, my instructor said it's because I "Give up on my swing", and don't follow through strongly. So for the past couple months, I've been working solely on my follow through and it has improved my ball striking greatly. The problem now, is that I haven't had a lesson in 2 weeks, and now I'm drawing the ball pretty consistantly with my irons, but hitting low hooks off of the tee. Exactly opposite of what I used to do.

I've compensated for the draw with my irons, since it's fairly consistant, and it has actually helped me gain some distance on my irons. There's also a lot of shots on my home course where a draw comes in handy, so I love it.

The problem is with my driver. Those low hooks travel a mile on the ground, but I'd like to get some air under them. I called my instructor and told him the problem I was having, and he laughed, and said "Yep, you're doing the right thing, we'll make some adjustments to you on Monday and you'll be good to go" He was actually happy that I was hooking and drawing the ball............ I wish I shared his excitement, because these hooks off the tee are killing me a slow death the past few rounds.

Other than that and my putting, my game is improving nicely. Chips and Pitches were great, irons were decent. Fairway Woods were decent. I just need to get off the tee a bit better, and my handicap will plummet. Well, as long as I learn how to putt..............

Very cool. I had a draw for awhile... it was a pretty shot... especially when I was playing a dogleg left. I've gone back to a straight ball, slight fade though. None of it was intentional. I USED to play a pretty big slice, especially off the tee with a 3 wood or driver. I changed my grip about 5 years ago so that the V formed by my thumb and index finger on my left hand is pointing towards my right shoulder blade... but my right hand is turned over the top of the grip and I can see the top knuckles of my index, middle and SOME of the knuckle of my ring finger. That's when I started to draw the ball. As I said before, however... it's back to a slight fade, especially with my 5 iron and 7 iron. Ironically... my 6 iron is still pretty straight... and my other irons are straight. My hybrid clubs (18 and 21 degree) are pulls. No matter what I do... they go straight as an arrow... but I pull them.

Good luck playing the draw and I'm sure your instructor will work it all out for you on Monday. Hopefully you're right and your handicap drops like a rock.

Yeah, I'm hoping............

Today wasn't too bad considering how bad I expected to play after last weekend. I just laughed the bad shots off and tried not to let them bother me today.

Now if I can just get it together off the tee................ Hitting 10 fairways isn't much good if they're only 180-200 yards out. I could do better with my 5 wood than I am with my driver these past few rounds. My driver used to be one of the bright spots of my game, but not so much the past couple weeks.

I used to have that exact problem (still do sometimes) and i think (without seeing your swing i cant really be sure) that grip is probably too strong. To stop the push you might have sub conciously made your grip strong to compensate for the right shoulder going up instead of through. So now your follow through is right you are hooking it. You just need to change your grip and you should be sweet. JMHO, but you should listen to your instructor not me ( i dont really know anything) , he should sort it out.

    • Day 22: mirror work for a while. Working on my elbow in the downswing - keeping it in a better position.
    • Day 36 (16 Dec 25) - continued the exaggerated left foot weight shift trigger adding some easy low flighted pitches with the 5h and a few putting style bump and runs with the 5h as well.

    • Has anyone played the new Maxfli forged irons? For the first time in I don't know how many years, they have come out with new clubs. From what I read, Maxfli was bought by Taylor Made a long time ago which then took all of their ball making technology and patents in order to get into that market. The club business was left to whither and the reorganized company, now a part of Dicks / Golfworks / Maltby, is producing these new clubs. (Their Tour X balls which I play are really good.) Anyway, I tried them both out at Golf Galaxy. There's a player's distance iron (XC-3) and a blade (XC-2) and both feel really, really nice, almost "Mizuno-like" in their soft buttery feel and they're a bargain at $800 for a set. I'm planning to ditch my Titleist's and want to go back to a forged iron. I almost pulled the trigger on the Mizuno Pro-245's last summer, but a damaged tendon sheath in my finger combined with a back injury messed up my golf game so I held off. Now the Pro-245's are no longer available, soon to be replaced by the MX-15. (At twice the price of the Maxfli's...that's what got my attention in the first place.) If anyone has played with the new Maxfli's or just tried them out like I did, let me know what you think.
