My wife would like to get me something golf related for our aniversary on monday. I am pretty well equipped with regards to equipment (bag, clubs, cart, etc) and am looking for stuff that will improve my short game, improve my ball strking, IE make me a better golfer. I believe that I have the swing of a 10~15 handicap, and have been told this by several people. (see link for thread about of my swing) I feel my game is improving with practice, and that practice is what will take me to the next level, not more lessons. So I ask you TGT, what should I spend my golf money on? I don't have a specific budget but figure around $200 is a good starting point.

I have some ideas, but would like to see what other people suggest.

Have you invested in a quality hand held GPS?

You may play the same course every week and think you know the distances, but a GPS can also help you properly identify club distances.

There are several available for under $200.

I paid $150 2 yrs ago for an iGolf NEO....not fancy, just good distances.....you can now get it for $99. Others in my group were using the SkyCaddie, but when they are having signal issues, I am good to go.

Have you invested in a quality hand held GPS?

I had briefly considered a GPS, I currently use Golf Logix on my iPhone, but am not sure how accurate that is. I guess its pretty close, well at least close enough for my game.

In my bag:

a few golf balls

Clicgear 2.0 pushcart if you don't have one and walk alot...? a set of lessons? pay for 2 sets of greens fees at better courses near you, and if you want more out of it, get a two for one: get one greens fee for just yourself at a nice course...and get another one including a ride along with your wife...just the two of you, spend time together, you play golf, and she gets enjoyment out of spending time with you on your anniversary...

I have a cheapie pull cart that I currently use, is a clicgear really that much better?

This is an excellent idea, except my wife dispises ALL things golf. She lets me play because she knows I love the game, but has no interest in taking up any portion of the game. She prefers a good book, and when I leave to play, I think she cuddles into a comfortable recliner with a warm blanket and a good book.

A handheld GPS, I personally recommend the skycaddie but only because that's what I use and have no experience with other brands. Maybe a couple lessons?? That would make a pretty nice package right there!!!

Yes ClickGear is that much better, would go for that before you go for GPS or Rangefinders.

- a small video camera with little tripod (I can show you how to connect it to your bag for taping at the range - in stealth mode). - chipping baskets / driving net - portable putting green with ball return -

If you walk, definitely get a good quality cart. Either SunMtn or ClicGear. I have the former, but wished I had bought the latter.

You could also get a punch card for range balls. They usually discount the range balls by 10-20% this way.

I figured I would update this thread as I made a decision.

I decided to get a package of lessons from the pro that I was working with last year and then I decided to go non golf for the rest of the gift and got theatre tickets for my wife and I so we can enjoy a nice date night with something we will both enjoy.

In my bag:

a bag of tee's some already broken the rest soon to be

      Never practiced golf when I was young and the only lesson ever taken was a driver lesson. I feel like I'm improving every year. However, the numbers don't support my feeling about improving. I usually drop to 12-13 during the summer while playing the familiar courses around home and then go on golf trips in the fall to new courses and increase to end the year between 15-17. Been a similar story for a number of years now but hey, it's the best thing there is in life so not too bothered but reaching 9.9 is the objective every year. Maybe a few lessons and practice could help me achieve it since I pretty much have no idea what I'm doing, just playing and never practice.

      I am semi-loyal. Usually buy four dozen of one ball and only play that until out and then determine whether to continue or try another one. Since starting my semi-loyal path to success, I've been playing the below, not in order: ProV1 ProV1x ProV1x left dash AVX Bridgestone BXS Srixon Z-star XV I am not sure if it has helped anything, but it gives a bit of confidence knowing that it at least is not the ball (while using the same one) that gives different results so one thing less to mind about I guess. On the level that I am, not sure whether it makes much difference but will continue since I have to play something so might as well go with the same ball for a number of rounds. Edit: favorite is probably the BXS followed by ProV1/Srixon Z-star XV. Haven't got any numbers to back it up but just by feel.

      Will not do it by myself, going to the pro shop I usually use after Cristmas for input and actually doing the changes, if any, but wanted to get some thoughts on whether this was worthwhile out of curiosity.

      In terms of ball striking, not really. Ball striking being how good you are at hitting the center of the clubface with the swing path you want and the loft you want to present at impact.  In terms of getting better launch conditions for the current swing you have, it is debatable.  It depends on how you swing and what your current launch conditions are at. These are fine tuning mechanisms not significant changes. They might not even be the correct fine tuning you need. I would go spend the $100 to $150 dollars in getting a club fitting over potentially wasting money on changes that ChatGPT gave you.  New grips are important. Yes, it can affect swing weight, but it is personal preference. Swing weight is just one component.  Overall weight effects the feel. The type of golf shaft effects the feel of the club in the swing. Swing weight effects the feel. You can add so much extra weight to get the swing weight correct and it will feel completely different because the total weight went up. Imagine swinging a 5lb stick versus a 15lb stick. They could be balanced the same (swing weight), but one will take substantially more effort to move.  I would almost say swing weight is an old school way of fitting clubs. Now, with launch monitors, you could just fit the golfer. You could have two golfers with the same swing speed that want completely different swing weight. It is just personal preference. You can only tell that by swinging a golf club.

      Thanks for the comments. I fully understand that these changes won't make any big difference compared to getting a flawless swing but looking to give myself the best chance of success at where I am and hopefully lessons will improve the swing along the way. Can these changes make minor improvements to ball striking and misses then that's fine. From what I understood about changing the grips, which is to avoid them slipping in warm and humid conditions, is that it will affect the swing weight since midsize are heavier than regular and so therefore adding weight to the club head would be required to avoid a change of feel in the club compared to before?
