I was at the driving range today with my instructor after work for a group lesson with me and a friend. Today were were working on driver, and I was very inconsistant with my driver. Very. Slices and Hooks, how does that happen?

So I grabbed my buddy's Diablo and noticed immediately that it's a lot heavier than my Cleveland. So I teed it up, took a nice easy swing and hit it straight down the middle, 240 yard carry. I proceeded to do this 5 times in a row with his driver. I grabbed my driver, and the immediate feeling is that it was very light compared to the Diablo. I took a nice, easy swing, like I did with the Diablo, and it sliced pretty badly. So I got mad at the driver, teed one up and took a very hard swing. 100% of what I could swing, I did. Long and straight. I did this about 10 times in a row, nice and straight, but I'm swinging waaaaaaaay too hard to keep it up. I was literally exhausted after 10 balls, and thought that if I kept swinging that hard, I'd pull a muscle.

I can't afford a new driver right now, so my instructor suggested since my tempo and swing were better with the heavier driver, he is going to meet me during lunch tomorrow, and put some lead tape on my driver to make it a bit heavier and see if that helps my consistancy off the tee.

Has anyone else done this, and did you see an improvement?

I do a lot better when I choke up, I think that's why I hit the 3wd so much better, a little heavier and a shorter shaft. I'm thinking of getting my driver cut down an inch to 44.

the extra weight helps with tempo. when I first got my current irons, I went from a graphite shafted set to steel. It helped slow down my transitions and I was flushing them without problem. I got used to the weight and my ball striking left me until I learned better tempo control.

You wanna add 50 yards to your next tee shot " everytime?" get "The Hammer" now only 99 dollars , that's just 99 dollars , rofl

use the lead tape until you find the weight you like, then hit the shop and have them weight the driver down the shaft so you don't see that ugly ass lead tape, cheap easy fix ......... good luck man

dude the diablo aint that heavy, its light as crap. same weight as ping g15 etc. The clevelands I think are just extra light, I know the cleveland launcher dts is the lightest driver ever made.

I

Not with my driver, but my putter. But if adding weight to your driver will help, got for it. Whats the worst that will happen? Take the tape off and buy a Diablo?

    • Day 36: back to some mirror work tonight. Need a bit more forearm roll in my feels to help with the shallowing.
    • _sigh_ so close to red text.  Went away for three days, but didn't do a practice morning-of-departure (Friday) nor evening-of-return (Sunday), so I had three misses, back to day one. Day 1, May 4 2026.  At home today, spent nearly an hour in my practice room, hitting about three dozen practice balls, primarily with my 6-iron.
    • Day 254 5-4 Arms off chest in backswing and downswing. Short swing, pause and then hit.  Hit foam balls. Keeping arching of wrist a focus as well.
    • I would think of it in terms of time. The time it takes to get the arm angle into a good position to deliver the club with proper shaft lean. Another component is rotation, but that is also a matter of timing. It relates to how the body stalls to give the golfer time to hit the ball. If you have to get 80+ degrees out of that right elbow in one third of a second versus 50 degrees in the same time then you have to steal time from somewhere. It is usually body rotation. That does not help with shaft lean.  I agree in that amateurs tend to make the swing more complicated than pro golfers.
    • I haven't been able to practice like I wanted and won't for the next week.  1. The weather sucks in Ohio this year. I have been mostly inside hitting foam balls. Just kind of my basic stuff.  2. I woke up last Saturday with a left side rib muscle on fire. If I turned or leaned a certain way it would spasm that almost buckled my knees. I have been taking a break to let that settle. I don't want to get a long term injury. I think I pinched a nerve or just aggravated a muscles.   3. I am going on a mini-vacation to Florida (screw you Ohio weather) with a friend, and rolling that into a work conference I have next week. I will be with out my clubs for a week.  I will be back next in two Fridays to hit the ground running with some warmer temps and better weather in Ohio, hopefully. I would really like to get more out on the course and the range.
