I've been in the market for new irons, something in between my Titleist Tour Blades (ligament damage in wrist means I'm not always feeling up to playing blades) and my PING Zing 2s (great clubs, but I've grown to prefer smaller heads, especially in the short irons).

I've been hitting different sets at the local golf shops for a couple weeks, on the simulator and on the range. I narrowed it down to 4 solid contenders and a wild card entry: Nike VR Full Cavity, PING I15, Titleist AP1, MIzuno MX-200, and Callaway X-Forged. The X-Forged were the wild card because I was looking for more of a forgiving, vibration-reducing, game improvement head.

All nice sets, the first ones out were the Nikes and the PINGS, Nikes just didn't feel right , almost too light, and the PINGS couldn't quite compete with the others on vibration/feedback. Liked the AP1s a lot, but I was more consistent with the other 2 sets, and didn't like the feel quite as much. Callaway X-Forged were the surprise of the bunch, the had Project X 6.0s in 'em and they felt like butter. I hit a bunch of balls, some purposely off the toe, and while they let me know I missed, they continued to feel smooth, and twisted less in my hands than the AP1s. Go figure. The Mizuno MX-200s were fantastic, comfortable, easy to look at, set up well, great feel on impact, and nice feedback without penalizing my wrist.

It was honestly a toss-up between the X-Forged and the MX-200s, I traded in the Zings and went with the Mizunos based on their performance and reputation, the fact that I've already got a set of forged blades, and because the larger cavity on the Mizunos should be gentler on my wrist over time.

Taking 'em out for 18 on Saturday, can't wait.

No replies, so I guess I missed the mark with this write-up. But for anyone who gave this thread a quick read, I refrained from hitting the Mizunos today just in case I changed my mind. Which I did-I couldn't get the fantastic feel of the Callaway X-Forged out of my mind, thought about 'em all day, came home and held the Mizunos and realized I'd always be wondering what if? So I'm trading the Mizuno MX-200s for the X-Forged tomorrow morning, and I'll play 'em on Saturday. I'll let you know how it goes.

There you go :) I really can't say enough good things about my X-forged. I came from golfing Mizuno Tzoids, Titleist DCI990's and wanted to stick with Mizuno. Hit the MP62, Titleist AP2, Ping S58, and litrally every muscle back and blade-esq cavity back out there. The X-forged is dead smooth, gives you great control of your shots, and forgiving as well. Again, can't say enough good things about my X-forged!

before you do that, do yourself a favor and try the ap2's

Great clubs, probably the best Titleist makes, but over my price ceiling.

Glad to hear-really tough decision in the first place, I literally told the guy at the store that I preferred the X-Forged but my head was telling me to go with the MX-200s. I must have known somewhere though, cause I didn't even think about hitting them today. If I'd never hit the Callaways (which I wasn't planning to do), I'm sure I'd be super-satisfied with the Mizunos. Luckily it's an even swap.

Ugh-woke up with tremendous pain in my wrist, probably going to stick with the Mizunos. Both great sets, maybe I'll also pick up the X-Forged someday.

It seems interesting to me that you were cross shopping the MX200 with the callaway x forged. These are two very different sets of irons. While I've hit, and loved the x-forged, it's not so far removed from a blade... although they are certainly smooth and forgiving.

Did you try the MP58?

I wasn't planning on shopping the X-Forged, I have a set of Titleist Tour Model Blades, and was specifically looking for something along the lines of the AP1, I15, or MX-200. Just happened to see the X-Forged sitting there and decided to try 'em out. They are great clubs, forgiving for what they are, but not too different from a blade, so my wrist pain and common sense eventually triumphed.

    • Day 36: back to some mirror work tonight. Need a bit more forearm roll in my feels to help with the shallowing.
    • _sigh_ so close to red text.  Went away for three days, but didn't do a practice morning-of-departure (Friday) nor evening-of-return (Sunday), so I had three misses, back to day one. Day 1, May 4 2026.  At home today, spent nearly an hour in my practice room, hitting about three dozen practice balls, primarily with my 6-iron.
    • Day 254 5-4 Arms off chest in backswing and downswing. Short swing, pause and then hit.  Hit foam balls. Keeping arching of wrist a focus as well.
    • I would think of it in terms of time. The time it takes to get the arm angle into a good position to deliver the club with proper shaft lean. Another component is rotation, but that is also a matter of timing. It relates to how the body stalls to give the golfer time to hit the ball. If you have to get 80+ degrees out of that right elbow in one third of a second versus 50 degrees in the same time then you have to steal time from somewhere. It is usually body rotation. That does not help with shaft lean.  I agree in that amateurs tend to make the swing more complicated than pro golfers.
    • I haven't been able to practice like I wanted and won't for the next week.  1. The weather sucks in Ohio this year. I have been mostly inside hitting foam balls. Just kind of my basic stuff.  2. I woke up last Saturday with a left side rib muscle on fire. If I turned or leaned a certain way it would spasm that almost buckled my knees. I have been taking a break to let that settle. I don't want to get a long term injury. I think I pinched a nerve or just aggravated a muscles.   3. I am going on a mini-vacation to Florida (screw you Ohio weather) with a friend, and rolling that into a work conference I have next week. I will be with out my clubs for a week.  I will be back next in two Fridays to hit the ground running with some warmer temps and better weather in Ohio, hopefully. I would really like to get more out on the course and the range.
