Let's say I have a 5 year old brand name Driver (or fairway wood) sitting in my garage. If I'm in the market for a Driver upgrade, what would be the better buy, a new fitted shaft for the old Driver or a new Driver altogether (with stock shaft)? BTW, I mean better buy in terms of performance, not resale value.

Well, if you believe the obsolete list, it's this year's driver

Assuming the clubhead is the right fit for you, I would suspect the shaft to be a better buy, game-wise. However, all the big-name OEMs have quality stock shafts these days. An even better buy might be last year's driver with that stock shaft.

Assuming you got on with/like the look of the older driver head, a new, fitted shaft anyday of the week. Not enough people pay attention to the shafts they use.
