When tour players play their practice rounds a few days prior to an event, do they follow the normal rules of golf? For example, will a player hit a driver twice off a tee with two different shot shapes to see how it will play in competition? Will they hit an iron twice from the same spot to judge the distance?

nope... they will also hit lots of puts on each green to see how it breaks to where they think or know the various pins will be,

hit different pitch shots to the green to get a feel for it... that kind of thing

Other than some pace of play issues - I don't think they can occupy a hole for an hour on their own - they don't have any set rules. Some play practice rounds against other players, and use that to practice. Others play the hole once, then putt to where they expect the holes to be. Many play with more than 14 clubs, trying to figure out which one(s) they'll need for the tournament itself.

I'm more curious how they incorporate (or not incorporate) the rules when they gamble...I assume they have to play it straight if they are gambling (i.e., no second shots for practice)....I could be wrong.

No rules at all. They just do what they want.

I remember back (not sure of the year, probably 10+ years ago), ABC did a behind-the-scenes thing with Jesper Parnevik at the British Open. He mentioned that for one of the practice rounds he crawled out of bed late, ran to the first tee to make his time and had no warm up. He teed up a ball and hooked it into the tall grass. In his words, we just went to the spot where we would like to play from and played from there.

I will judge my rounds much more by the quality of my best shots than the acceptability of my worse ones.

The gambling part is probably all over the place. As mentioned above some might prepare with an official type round. Then there is the Pro Am. Also there are lots of ways to gamble in golf. Drop 2 balls 200 yards out for closest to the pin, out of a bunker, etc etc etc etc etc etc etc..........

    • Shedeur freeeeeeeeeeeeeeee fallin'. I'm definitely on board with the "Shedeur is bad" takes. Am I right? Dunno.  Milroe's still there. I feel like he has way more upside than Shedeur but again, I could be wrong. He seems at least as good as Malik Willis to me though.  My physical therapist loves Will Howard but he went to Ohio State so his opinion can't really be trusted. He any good?
    • I don't have one. I couldn't care much less about the draft. I don't care about sports much in the off-season: I care a little about my teams in the off-season. I'm not an NFL fan. I'm a quasi-Steelers fan.
    • @iacas What’s your take on Sanders getting rolled in the first round? Some aren’t surprised…some are. I was surprised Dart got picked before Sanders. I know those guys see stuff we don’t…I was a bit surprised he was passed.

    • Ok you’re right I’m wrong. After beating myself up trying to do well with my 20 year old ERC Fusion 10° driver, I bought a used Paradym driver 10.5° currently set to 11.5° (2023 technology) and what a difference. Not to drag out an old cliche’, but what a game changer.   After a rough day at the range (with Top Tracer) I picked up my new driver from the PO, drowned my sorrows a bit over lunch, and brought the new club home. I hit a couple balls on my home range and was more than pleased. Redeemed actually. Farther, straighter, and less effort. I’ll have to get used to the new lie angle, but I think it will make it easier, not harder.     And the best part - I only paid $110 for this unit (ok, the best part is how it launches the ball). It was a little rough in appearance, not that it matters, but I was a bit concerned. Turned out to not be so bad and with some Flitz and a little elbow grease, I have it looking quite spiffy.  Club face is nice too but the file was too big so that pic didn’t post.   And BTW X-ray, we sold the horses, so the old one isn’t even good for that!
