Can you put backspin on the ball with your irons? Instead of having the ball bounce off the green or run out to the fringe you have to make it stick. Then you can be less precise with your distance control and still get more GIR's having much more green to work with. Back spin comes from hitting down on the ball which is something most golfers under-do.

In my Bag:

Driver - SLDR 430 - 10.5 deg
3 Wood - SLDR HL
Irons - TM Tour CB's                                                                                                                                                                 Wedges - TM                                                                                                                                                                               Putter - Odyssey White Ice 2 Ball

Right now, I put minimal spin on the ball, but often it depends on the conditions and I don't have the money to buy spinning balls. I can't do like, like kick ass jumping backward spin either.

Try the TaylorMade TP Black or the Top Flite Gamer, cheap balls with excellent spin for the money. At your caliber, you really should be playing a premium ball.

Right now I play with the team provide NXT Tours. How much do those two cost?

The TP Black is $25-$30 for 12 balls and the Gamer is $15-$20 for 12 balls.

Anyway, I set up a coaching sessions with the pro at the country club my team plays at this weekend, so I figure he'll be able to hone some of the skills I'm lacking. I think the real problems lies in consistency. Wish me luck!

you need to learn how to make birdies happen. i was stuck where you are for about 2 years and once i figured out i can make birdies happen when i need them i went down to a 1. i was a 0.8 for a little but now im just over a 1.
assuming your accurate enough within 100 yards to stick it withing 10 feet of any pin, the key is knowing how to use your driver in all seriousness. the driver can be a weapon or a weakness and if you know how to use it you can have chip shots into par 4s all day but if you don't know how to use it your doing to be hitting 3 from the tee all day and punching out. you need to know when you need a birdie, by that i mean know what hole to try it on. the number 1 hcp hole is not the hole you need a birdie on, play defensive maybe a 3 wood off the tee and take a par. just be accurate enough with your driver that when you take it out to make a birdie that you can hit the spot you want and leave yourself a wedge shot in. obviously putting is equally important but you need to have a short approach shot then make the putt. if you want to improve work on your putting and tee shots, mainly accuracy. hope this helps and remember i'm not saying hit driver a lot i'm saying know what holes you can be aggressive on and don't be afraid to make a birdie happen because there not going to just come to you.

This is great advice. Thanks for the time

If you are hitting more than 50% of greens your GIR stat is very good. From the stats I see from good players they hit no more greens than that. Click Eriks score card. He is only hitting 50% or so and routinely shooting 73-75.

It has to be your short game. I think you have to be giving up shots around the green.

no problem. golf is a mental game so leave yourself with easy choices is basically what im getting at. once your a single digit its about being a strong mental player alot with improving the very few flaws left in your game

I've pin pointed scrambling as my problem right now, which was once one of my strongest suits, so I think that's why I haven't been concerned about it. It's definitely not my putting, I usually three putt once or twice every 36 holes or so with my fair share of one putts. I specifically remember my first time out this season I wasn't striking the ball spectacularly, but I was able to scramble from off greens and ended up with a 38, which was a marvel that early in the season. Now that my ball striking has really come around mid-season, I haven't been able to shoot much better than that.
