Hello all! Right now I am playing muscleback irons and am struggling with them. I am looking at the Bridgestone irons because lately I've seen them getting a lot of good reviews and the two particular models are the J33CB and J36CB that can be had for relatively cheap. Seeing as these are cavity backs I think they will be a little easier to hit or at least I hope they would be. Anyways if you had to make a decision and each you could get for the same price, which would you get between the J33CB or J36CB and why? Thanks!

well first off, what are you currently playing?
keep in mind the J36's are NOT full cavity backs, they are a muscle back
you need to be a good ball striker to hit them well....BUT they are pretty forgiving for a muscle back to say the least
and they can be worked and well

I came off the Nike CCi Forged and man, those things are TOUGH to hit for a MB
these are much better

shaft will also be a concern for you
I went from DG S300's to the Flighted PJX 6.0's and LOVE THEM!!!
lost a club in distance, but im not hooking them all over the place now - my consistency is waay better

IMO - w ur index, you should be able to handle the J36 CB's for sure
and ur right, they can be found cheap
I found mine on WRX slightly used for $250 USD shipped to my door + $27 for some Tacki Mac Itomic Grips and I have the wickedest (is that a word) set up ever!!!

i wish I had the black oxidized set, but these will do...heres mine

Well I have two sets of irons that I'm currently going back and forth with, but can't seem to hit either one worth a darn. Those two sets are the Taylormade RAC CB/MB combo and Titleist 990. I played Titleist 962's in high school and hit them well, but sold them a few years back and regret that. You think getting the J36's would be a good choice? Throw some suggestions at me if not. Thanks.

I'm thinking about pulling the trigger on them. How are Rifle 6.0 shafts? I've always played True Temper Dyamic Gold S300's. How will those Rifle's compare? Also how much more forgiving you think they will be than the Muscle Backs I currently play?

lol as far as Bridgestone products go, I currently switched to their e7 golf ball from trying various balls and picked up more yardage without sacrificing too much control around the greens. I absolutely love them.

i have never used the irons you have now, so i cant really compare, sorry dude

FOR ME, they are forgiving enough - i wouldnt want more or less i dont think i really wanted to get some blades, but figured why make this game harder than it has to be i used to think i was a DG guy too.....till i played the PJX shafts i love them they feel quite different than the DG but a better different...if that makes sense the S300's were way to weak for me, i was all over the place tried the PJX 5.5 as they are slightly stiffer than S300's and still needed to go stiffer the Flighted PJX 6.0's are wicked - great ball flight, responsive, light and look pretty sweet too w the stepless design buy em dude, i think u will like them

Yeah I was actually considering looking at the pocket cavities, but wasn't sure how thick the top line was. I don't particularly care for a big thick top line to look at, but I know I can't have the best of both worlds. What about the J33's? Anyone have any experience with them? Are they that much different than the J36's? I really wish there was a place close that carried these so I could go hit both of them, but no luck.

I though the DG S300 fell right between the Project X 5.5 and 6.0?

To the OP, I haven't had a chance to hit these irons but I played with a guy who has the J36 CB with Project X 6.5 shafts. He hit the ball a mile and told me the Bridgestones were the best set of irons he'd ever tried. Easy to hit yet workable, he said they felt better than a forged blade in his hands. During the 18 holes we played he was able to pull of some great shots.

I have the pocket cavities, and do not believe the topline is thick at all. But I came from AP1s which had a very thick topline in my opinion. I don't have a Cavity back to compare to though.

Okay another quick question. How do the J36's compare to the Nike Victory Red's and the Mizuno MX300's? I'm going to try to hit the Victory Red's and Mizuno's tomorrow granted they have them in the store, but there is nowhere even remotely close to me that I can hit the J36's so trying to get an opinion. Thanks!

No idea, other than Mizuno receives very few complaints. Look on the used rack for the J36s to try to hit one. That is where I found mine.

Yeah I'm going to visit a few shops tomorrow and see if they have an J36s on the rack, but I'm not feeling very optimistic. We shall see!

I play the J33 CB's with s300. I am looking at reshafting to the rifle 6.0. Dont get me wrong the s300's are great, but Im in the mood to change and try to tighten dispersion and find a little more control over flight height. As far as the irons them-selves, I love them. They are easy to hit, work, and look great at address. My only minor complaint is: it is somewhat difficult to hit these low (say under a tree branch or a similar situation), it seems they always want to get up in a hurry. A little different than my S59 blades w PX 5.5's. The PX's were a little harsh for my swing, so I think Im also going to install Rifle 6.0 (not flighted).

    • I generally like par-3 courses and find it a darn shame that the last of them closed in my area during the pandemic. Part of it may have to do with the fact that I never have been very good with the longer clubs, so the short holes are a bit more my speed.  Being able to get in 18 holes in two hours was pretty convenient and, ironically, the lack of crowds made them peaceful places to be. Naturally, that's the same reason they no longer exist around here.  The second option sounds like a whole lot of no fun.
