I just bought a new Taylormade Burner Superfast. It is much longer than my R5 that I replaced it with. Now I am on the new club train. If I can buy better irons I will.

I am currently playing Tommy Armour 845 Silver Scotts. The original smaller head.

I do not care about distance gains. I hit my 9 iron 150 yrds and would want to be around the same length with my new irons. I would be looking for more forgiveness for off-center hits and straighter irons overall. For the most part I would be happy to hit my irons dead straight.

I played a round with the Taylormade Tour Preferred. They were nice and felt really similar to my old irons. The new R9 TP's look nice as well. Has anyone hit both and have an opinion/preference?

Any other irons I should hit before I pull the trigger?

Thanks!

I have to ask.....if the TP's feel the same as yours....whay get new sticks? Those 845's are great clubs!! If you want to get something new and want an acurate, great feeling a dn workable club then maybe make the shift to a player cavity forged club. A few choices are:

Mizuno MX300, MP52,57,58 Titleist AP2 Calaway X Forged, Diable Forged Cobra S2 forged These are all great and popular clubs....other than the Cobras but et me tell you....they are almost every bit the club as the WILDLY popular MX300s if you ask me. If I were you i would start with those 2 then try the others.....but that's just me....

What's in my bag:
Superquad Driver
19* and 22* Rescue Hybrids
4-PW MP 57 Irons
CG14 52* Gap Wedge CG12 56* SW CG12 60* Lob Wedge CO3-hI push them around with my Linksmen X-7 cart.

I haven't played too many modern irons (i.e. under 5 years old) so when I tried the TM R9s with the graphite shafts I was shocked at how great they felt.

have not hit the regular tour preferred, but i have hit the r9 tp's several times. the r9 tp's are fantastic in my opinions, great shaft options as well. i preferred the kbs shafts i tried with them. my only warning about taylormade irons is their customization. the metal is very hard(on the rockwell hardness scale), so bending them to suit your lie angles are very, very tough to do. i believe you can order them in standard, 2* flat, and 2* upright. the clubheads come preset to those measurements. other than that, great sticks!

The TP are not going to be extremely forgiving, nor are the R9 TPs. In fact, Maltby rated both of them among the harder to hit clubs. TM has made some great irons in the past though, and their RAC forged CBs and R7s were fairly good. Keep an eye opened for the forged RAC irons.

They're made from the same metal as other OEM's cast clubs. They can be bent just as well. No cast club can be bent that far, so 2° is actually fairly normal.

I hit some clubs last week. I am leaning towards the AP2. The biggest reason I am thinking about switching is getting custom fitted. I think I might need a slightly longer shaft.

Do you guys think Golf Galaxy fitting would be good enough? I noticed that Titleist Fittingworks has advanced fitters (sadly though none in my state). Should I wait and hunt down the traveling fitting bus (or demo day) or should I just go with Golf Galaxy?

I am in MN if that means anything to anyone. I wouldn't mind going to a Country Club or local course if anyone had recommendations.

I recently purchased a set of new R7 TP with the S300 shaft on them. I got a very good deal on them obviously because TM don't make them anymore. But I'm very happy with my purchase. They feel very solid, and I gained some distance off my old irons. I hit a 5 irons at around 200.

I didn't get a chande to try the R9, and I must say that Taylor Made has kind of lost me when they got to the R9 but still, if they're like the R7, then go ahead, you won't be disappointed. And you could also check for some deals on R7, saving money is always good!

I did my fitting using the Titleist Surefit cart which really helped to find the right shaft. Personally, I would try to hit the clubs at an outdoor range to see trajectory and everything else.

I play the 710 AP2s and find them to be great clubs. On a normal day for me, I hit about 8 or 9 GIR compared to the 2 or 3 GIR I used to hit with my old SGI irons. Quite forgiving, easy to work and they feel great on a good strike. I will not consider new irons anytime soon as these have really helped my game.

As said by some people, just go to a GolfSmith and hit at and outdoor range to see you distance and flight patterns. I am using the TM Tour Burner irons and love them; today I shot my best round, 87 and hit a 4 iron 250 down wind on a par 4, I was very impressed with my play. Anyways, I have hit the R9 and R9 TP's but not the Tour Preferred irons. I like the regular R9's over the R9 TP's because they just felt more forgiving but if you hit shots consistent you should be fine with the R9 TP's. I know the R9's will be my next irons or the just the next installment or two since I just bought my Tour Burners a week ago.

    • The term I hear most often is "double teeing" which means the course/club has starting times from both the #1 and #10 tee.  I have encountered this many times and we know if we are the first group off #10, we may well get to #1 and have to wait because there are groups still with tee times yet to tee of #1.  In most instances, where the course/club has a starter, he normally explains this situation.  In this case, the pro advised what you would could/would encounter making the turn to #1.  And, that is exactly what happened.  Probably would have been wise to talk to the pro after playing back 9 and ask when you could go off #1 since apparently that club does not double tee.   Regardless, the outburst towards the other group was uncalled for.  And, I don't blame the member for being upset.  As a member of a private club, you are responsible for the actions of your guest.  I have played many times as a guest in the UK and I am pretty damn sure my host was responsible for my actions while at the club.  I know at the clubs I have belonged to here in the US, that is the way it is.  As a matter of fact, the member may find himself being brought before management and facing possible suspension.  So, I don't blame him for being upset.  However, as the host, he really should have stepped up and put a stop to the OP's actions.  OP makes this statement "I now understand that standards are different on the "private course." But I'll take those lessons to the muni, too."  No, the standards are not different.  You, sir, seem to be just a bit hard headed and belligerent, even if you are college professor...which possibly explains a lot.   JMHO
    • Day 32: worked for about 10 minutes on my drill. Filmed it as well for a check in. I think it’s slightly better but still seeing some issues.
    • Day 44 (26 Dec 25)  -  played in the Friday men’s shootout with a twist - used the Toney Penna persimmons and MacGregor blades - had a blast playing these clubs.  They really help in zoning in on making solid ball contact.  Scoring was solid - had several looks at birdie and had a few par saves.  Overall a day of focused course management.
    • Day 2: 2025.12.27 Eighteen holes at Kauri Cliffs. Focusing on trying to keep flex in right leg during backswing.
    • Day 136 12-26 Had a different practice planned today but life happened. Worked on "wide to wide" and still working on remaining flowy. Starting the club head in front of the ball as a drill, is helping with the flow of the swing.
