My terrible putting is getting in the way of imporovement. I consistently 3-putt from any point on the green, my last round I only had one 1-putt and thirteen 3-putts! I would like to buy a new putter but I know that won't help, so please give me a drill I can spend an afternoon on the practice green with. Thanks!

set a club on the practice green about 2 feet behind the hole. Try to stop the ball, while trying to make it, in between the club and the hole. As long as you can do this, and get the ball about 2 feet away from the hole, you should always 2 putt and occasionally 1 putt.

You can also try setting a ball on each side of the cup. you should have 4 balls that form a square around it. First start them about 1 foot away, then 2, then 4,6,8,and finally 10. Don't advance to the next distance until you can make all 4 putts.

These tips and a ton of practice will definitely help your putting.

A metronome helps me work on my timing. A couple of coins on the ground to show how far your backswing and follow thru also is good for distance drills.

Do the lag putting drill and do the like 4 ball drill for those 4-6 footers
lag putting will help your distance control so you dont leave it 10 feet + short or long for a 2 putt in.
Get those 2-6 footers automatic though

If your 3 putting a lot that means your lag putts are either coming up way short or your hammering them past. Which one? Work on your distance control. For shorter puts I like the 3 and 6 foot circle drill with 10 balls. Try and make it around the circle without missing. If you miss start over. Once you accomplish that, then try and make it twice around with out missing. Good luck!

Are you missing 3 footers? If so, circle the hole with 6 balls at three feet (length of your putter), and don't leave until you make all 6 without missing-or set a time limit.

Lag putting-develop feel. To develop feel, line up 20' from a target...a tee in the ground will do. Put another tee inline, 10 foot from you. Hit a ball and approach the far target. Hit the next ball, if it passes the previous ball, it's -1 point. If it's past the first tee, but doesn't pass the next ball, it's +1 point. The goal is to see how many points you can get. If you don't pass the 1st tee, the round is over and record your score...now beat that score.

Playing with a friend? play "horseshoes". Pick a hole. 2 balls each. Sink it, 3 points, within a club length is 1 point, but only the closest get's points. Play to 21.

There are more ideas in the books putting out of your mind by Rotella, and Zen Golf by Parent...both available on audiobook. I listen on the way to the course.

1. Get a quart-sized water bottle and put it in the hole. Practice hitting the bottle from short distances. This helps you get over the fear of missing the hole because you're never aiming at a hole. If you practice this enough, when you play you'll have a strong image of a bottle in the hole and you'll just hit that.

2. As for approach putting, take four balls and drop them at 15', 20', 25', and 30'. Practice getting them all within 18" of the hole. Don't try to sink them. Just get them close.

3. Get some lessons. There has to be something wrong with your setup or stroke to have this many 3-putt greens. Actually, get the lessons first.
