Playing match play that is.

I played my second match of the season today, (senior handicap division). The first one was almost 3 weeks ago in the open handicap division, and I lost 3 & 2, but actually felt pretty good about it, as I was 5 down after 7 and took the match to 16 before being closed out. My game was in the toilet at the time, and I just didn't go into the match with a good mindset.

Today was different though. My driving is much improved with the new Callaway Diablo Edge, and I've been working on my short game so that is light years better than it was in the first match, and it shows. Today I won 4 & 3, and there was really never a doubt after the 5th hole. I even had to give my opponent 13 strokes (he was a 27 to my 14), but shooting 40 on the front went a long way to evening that out. We would be around the green looking like a halve, but I was chipping up for a one putt while he was chipping and 2 putting.... most of the time when he did that I won the hole, or at worst tied because he was getting a stroke. I had a couple of bad holes, but they never really hurt as we halved one of them, and the other he made a rare par to my double... and he got a stroke there as well. I was dormie after 14, then halved 15 for the win.

I have one more match to play this month in the master senior division. I'm looking forward to that one too.

I love match play. Just wondering who else is in a match competition this year, and how it's going for you.

Congrats - we play an elim format. 2 years ago I lost in the finals. Last year I won it all. This year I got dumped in the first round - was up 4 with 7 holes to go and managed to throw it away. There's always next year!

Ours is a single elimination bracketed style too. We run 6 match play tournaments concurrently: Open scratch and handicap, Senior scratch and handicap, Master senior handicap, and Fourball (2 man better ball). I entered 3 of the individual brackets.

Good win! I was never a big fan of match play until last year. The county course was holding their club championship with a qualifying round and then match play. I qualified 4th and then ended up earning a first round bye. I won the second round on the 19th hole after making a huge 10 foot putt on the 18th to even it. Third round I destroyed my opponent 5 & 3 but it wasn't even really THAT close. In the 36 hole final, I started out well but ended up being pounded into oblivion 6 & 4.

This year I joined a club that plays a different style and they host a low net tournament, a singles match within your foursome and then a doubles match within your foursome. At the end of the year, the person with the best record in singles wins that title and the team with the best record in doubles wins that title. Unfortunately, my partner was assigned to me and a few weeks ago had some rules issues and was removed from the club. That has eliminated me from doubles even though I have a 5-1-1 record (no extra holes in the matches). In singles, I've got a 6-1-0 record so far. My only loss being the worst round of the year for me and one in which I didn't have a shot because my opponent was getting 12 strokes from me and he played lights out until AFTER the match was closed out. I lost that one 5 & 4 but my wins have all been big (5 & 3 - 6 & 4 - 3 & 2 - 3 & 2 - 7 & 5 - 4 & 3).

I've grown really fond of match play over the course of the last year. It's a fun format. I wish that the club we were in used flights rather than handicaps... but - still... I can't complain. The singles leader is 6-0-1 and I'm only percentage points behind him. I'm taking a loss in 3 weeks when I have to miss an event so... I'm hoping SOMEBODY can hand him a loss either this week or at the event I'll be missing.

We have a match play session during the season and then club championship is stroke play. We started match play last week, won the first round with a playoff, birdie on first hole won it for me, second round is next week, got beat out last year first round on the third extra hole---for some reason I end up going extra holes all the time---these are not the first and second time, several years back I went extra a couple of years as well. I really enjoy match play and wish we would do it more often. Our mens league has a match play event now and then also.

Ours starts this week. We have 32 people in our championship flight with HDCP's ranging from +3 to 8. As I posted in my blog yesterday my draw is awful! My first match on paper should be a slam dunk but I have seen this guy go low….extremely low. If I make it through him the reigning match play champ and club champ 3 out of the last 4 years is next. He and I play a 9-hole mock match last night after our money game. I won 2 up and shot a 35 (in the wind and rain). He and I are the favorites in our bracket but there are 2 others from the bottom bracket that are fantastic golfers. Both are in their 50's, neither of them make mistakes, and anything inside 10' is almost automatic. I hate playing guys like that but I absolutely love match play.

The good news is our course is in fantastic shape. The greens have fully recovered and are lush and true. The rough is long and thick and will truly penalize you for any errant shot. Many of the small trees that were planted several years ago are growing like weeds and will also make you pay the price.

Good luck to everyone this match play season!

Ours is a bracket elimination as well. I played my second round match against a 23 handicap guy, I gave him 5 shots. He shoots a 43 on the front to have me two down and I double the first 3 holes on the back to go 5 down. He closed me out when I doubled the 16th. This year is the only year I felt like I beat myself. In the other years, the other guys played really well.

I've lost in the second round each of the last 3 years. Two of the guys shot their low round of the year against me. The 3rd shot the low round of his life.

Our work league is match play but because of the huge dispersion of talent level it is sometimes less competitive than it should be.

e.g. Lowest guy carries a 3 HC for 9 holes, highest guy carries a 24.. so when you're giving up 21 shots on 9 holes.. its a pretty steep uphill battle from the get-go. But it's early in the year yet, and that will equalize a bit hopefully.

I play with one friend most often though and we always play matches. We're close enough in skill that we can play heads up and it will usually be close. He has about 15 yd of driving distance on me, with all other things equal, so if we play the same tees (depending on the course) I might take a stroke on the two longest par 4's per side.

One beer per side is the bet. Plus bragging rights until the next round of course.

Having anything on the line is better than nothing. Especially to test your putting.

    • Day 87 (27 Jul 25) - Made it an easy session with the wedge this afternoon, worked on staying in the shot and not lifting out - split between low spinners and higher floaters.
    • Shot my new low 72 (par 70) today. Had 5 birdies, also a new best, which included a hole out from the bunker on par 3 6th, and another hole out pitch from 15ish yards on the long par 4, 15th.  Got a couple of other good breaks. Except for an OB drive on 14th (and ensuing double bogey), not much went wrong. All in all I might have used up a year's worth of luck in a single day.
    • Back in the saddle after vacation.  Day 1: played 18. Did not have it, but still battled to an 82. Felt closer to a 90, but that’s fine.
    • Yes, I have seen this from the older crowd that play the 4,700 yard tees and want to know why they get less strokes from there. Always trying to game the system 🤣
    • Day 300 - 2025-07-27 Good 44-ball segment. GSPro was acting goofy, so I just put it on the Quad. Then I hit a bunch of low spinners. Hit 14° down to 9.8° down, with the average closer to 12.3° or so. Focused mostly on the backswing. Right knee good, hands roll up and out a little before laying off (FAR).
