Had a great round today despite poison ivy all over my hands : / maybe it kept my focus off my swing and just let me hit the ball. I had several realllly nice shots. I am typically reserved but I feel that at least a couple of the shots were scratch player good. I made a 30 foot putt to save par and had, no lie, either 4 or 5 birdie putts...all of which lipped out. Not once was I mad though, because my putting was awesome. My chipping was much improved as well. My driver let me down a bit but I did learn something about it today. I need a stiff shaft... I hit my uncle's burner with a stiff shaft and both drives were on a rope and slightly farther instead of a fade at best and slice at worst.

I had a 45 on the front (par 35) and a 42 on the back (par 37) for an 87. I had a blow up hole on the front and back (a 7 on the front and an 8 on the back...both on par 4s). I am excited to think about my future rounds if I can eliminate those holes. Bogeys on both those holes would havedropped my score to a nice 82.

All in all it was a fantastic day, I actually looked like I knew what I was doing. But I have to remember that I have only been playing for a short time and consistency will ocme with more rounds.

Seems we are in the same boat, managed to break 90 in two consecutive rounds this week (86 and 89). I played really good for the 86 but felt like I was 10 over par for the 89, couldn't putt at all! It's a good feeling when all the practice starts to show itself on the course! Keep at it!

Poison Ivy on your hands, that would drive me nuts, probably unable to putt good..

Congrats on breaking 90, now its time to work down to 80...

To do that, elimate all lost balls, penalties, ect, and try to hit a few more GIR's...

Yeah, I hit two into water, saved par on one and bogey on the other, so it could have been worse. Those were my only penalties. GIRs were pretty good, but could certaintly improve. The blow up holes killed me though.

Congratulations. May you have many more sub-90 rounds.

Congrats to both of you on breaking 90. I was on track for breaking 90 today, but my blow-up holes were 17 and 18 unfortunately. I dropped 6 strokes on those two holes to finish with a 95.

Great job! I'm still working on this goal. Hope you have many more sub 90 rounds.

Thanks a lot guys! Several days later now, I have yet to be back out o the course (stupid poison). But I am feeling much better today and will be out on the range tonight (hitting new drivers! - see thread in equipment section). Hopefully I can go out and back up my latest round with another good one this weekend.

    • I don't know what to tell you. You can't test wedges with range balls, and you have a LOT more info to gather before you can begin to really even test anything else, either.
    • Day 27 - 2026-01-16 Played 18 with some of the usual "too many voices" going on when I'm working on swing stuff. Fun to get out in great bay area winter weather.
    • I know one recent college grad who's trying the same thing.  This guy was a Division III All-American, went on to play one year at Division I LSU, and is not working hard.  He won the Gulf States Open, a pro event, and made it to the second stage of the Korn Ferry Tour School late in the fall.  And didn't make the cut to get to the final stage.  I won't talk about swing or play stuff, but I believe there are a couple of things that are essential.  Obviously, talent, and drive, or work ethic.   I can't tell you how to do it, but you HAVE to get through it.  Golf is going to be your life, and it takes lots of work. Two more things that are really critical.  You'll need the facility to be able to practice.  My young friend stayed in Baton Rouge, as a past player on the team he can still use the LSU practice facilities.  And money.  Its unlikely you'll be able to work a full-time job and practice the way you will need to.  You'll probably need backing, from a parent, from a consortium of friends or club members., something to support you. Good luck, its not an easy path, but anything is possible.  Another young man from our area, Mike Brennan, just won for the first time on the "big" PGA Tour.
    • No one in the world is as smart as Phil thinks he is.
    • Get more comfortable with being uncomfortable. If you don’t like practicing then give up now. You don’t have the passion to become a pro. Unless that mentality changes you won’t do well under stressful situations.    Call the PGA Tour and ask. They probably have resources available.
